AdSpotting: Prius goes funny… At Last

The Prius is an unabashed market success. It defines the hybrid segment. And it is the market leader in fuel economy. It does everything but run on actual crunchy granola in the gas tank. Prius ads do not need to play up the fact that they are super fuel efficient. Everyone knows. So, as we showed you a few days ago , turning to this approach of having NBA star Steve Nash talk about how driven he is, as if it was a Nike ad, is a creative homerun. His deadpan monologue about how competitive he is, talking about making constant adjustments and improvements to his game, while driving a Prius and finally edging out a grandma for a parking space is a way to stand out from the usual hybrid ad that merely screams the highway fuel economy rating. Gotta love Nash’s trash-talk dance at the end too.

Just how competitive is Mr. Nash? The man thinks of everything in life as something you can win. Case in point, Nash will push his Toyota Prius to beat an old lady into a parking spot if it means he can chalk up another “victory.” How does he celebrate the win? By shoving it in Grandma’s face. 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV will "definitely be sold to the general public"

Filed under: Crossover , Toyota , Electric Recent reports, including ours , have incorrectly stated the 2012 RAV4 EV will only be sold to fleet and car sharing organizations. Though we now know that’s not true , we’d like to set the record straight by quoting an official response from Toyota about the inaccurate reports: The 2012 RAV4 EV will definitely be sold to the general public. We anticipate robust public interest in the RAV4 EV and are keen to inform consumers that their future vehicle options include a battery electric Toyota. Toyota is the only manufacturer bringing two battery electric vehicles to the market in 2012 – the RAV4 EV and the Scion iQ EV . While the RAV4 EV will be available to the public, the Scion iQ EV will be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs only. So, perhaps a model name mix-up triggered the erroneous reports? Either way, we’re glad that the all-electric crossover will be available for retail sale. Thirsty for more details on the electric RAV4? Check out Autoblog Green’s quick spin of the prototype RAV4 EV . Toyota offers back-seat passengers a new Window to the World

Filed under: Concept Cars , Etc. , Videos , Toyota , Design/Style Everywhere we look we’re surrounded by “smart” technology embedded into everyday items. Refrigerators have built-in televisions and internet connections, while our phones contain more computing power than a NASA control room from the ’70s. Automakers are also ready to ride the tech-train to tomorrow, and Toyota has provided a glimpse of a new way to give passengers a window to the world. A car already has such a window, but what if the glass was able to provide both information of the world outside and an interactive tool to view it. Engineers and designers from Toyota Motor Europe and the Copenhagen Instituted of Interaction Design have begun thinking about the future, and it could feature a rather unique option for the rear windows. Touch-screen glass would allow one to see how far objects lie in the distance, pinch to zoom on an area outside and to generally learn more about what’s going on outside. It’s called the Window to the World concept, and you can experience it by watching the video after the jump . Scion FR-S designed with a rollcage in mind and other key tidbits

Filed under: Scion , Toyota , Rumormill The diehards at Club4AG have been patiently waiting for a new generation of sports car from Toyota. It seems one of the sites founding members got a closer look at what’s in store for the production version of the Toyota FT-86 II / Scion FR-S . User Moto-P got the chance to attend a dinner meeting with chief project engineer Tetsuya Tada , and it sounds like many a bean was spilled. It’s apparent from Moto-P’s time spent with Tada that the upcoming vehicle is designed to be a true sports car, for true enthusiasts. The engine has been tuned by Yamaha to produce inspiring sounds. Racers will appreciate the space left on either side of the dash, which is there to accommodate a rollcage without also requiring that you cut up the dashboard. There’s even a chance the car will come sans CD player and navigation unit to keep things light and simple in the cabin, yet an iPod connection would still be offered. Moto-P goes on to express his love for the brand, the main engineer and the upcoming car itself. It’s clear that this person is a huge fan, so we take everything said in the forum with a grain of salt. Still, it’s interesting to hear about what may be in store for the long-awaited FT-86/Toyobaru.
