2012 Toyota Camry gets Consumer Reports “Recommended” rating

2012 Toyota Camry gets Consumer Reports “Recommended” rating

December 30, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Sedan , Toyota Toyota was once the unquestioned lead sled dog when it comes to the Consumer Reports “Recommended” list, but the automaker and the consumer advocacy group have had a bit of a falling out over the past couple years. In 2010, the publication removed the Recommended ratings of many models as a result of Toyota’s unintended acceleration controversy. In January Ford nearly overtook Toyota in overall Recommended ratings. We’re on the verge of a new year, and it appears that the Toyota is getting back on CR’s good side. Bloomberg reports that the February issue of CR reveals that the 2012 Camry has scored the coveted tag. The non-profit lauded the Camry for its improved interior and fuel economy, along with an upgraded ride. The four-cylinder Camry averaged 27 miles per gallon during CR testing, tying the Hyundai Sonata for most efficient in the mid-size segment. We’re quite certain that the 2012 Camry would have sold like gangbusters whether or not it was Recommended by Consumer Reports . But at the same time, CR subscribers seem to really like their Toyota models, so it certainly helps to have a thumbs-up from the powerful publication. 2012 Toyota Camry gets Consumer Reports “Recommended” rating originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 10:15:00 EST.

Toyota tops recall list again in 2011, overall number of U.S. recalls down

December 30, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Recalls , Safety , Ford , GM , Toyota Toyota launched a total of 13 recall campaigns in 2011 covering over 3.5 million vehicles. Those figures put the Japanese automaker at the top of the most-recalled list for the third year in a row, according to Ward’s Auto . Between 2009 and 2010, Toyota recalled nearly 11.5 million vehicles in North America for a variety of reasons, including troublesome floor mats and sticky accelerators tied to the company’s unintended acceleration woes. The company says that around 85 percent of vehicles involved in the pedal recall have been fixed, with lower volume models continuing to trickle into dealers. But Toyota wasn’t the only automaker with recall woes in 2011. Ford found itself in second place for the number of vehicles recalled this year with 10 campaigns covering 3.2 million vehicles. For its part, General Motors issued a total of 21 recalls, but the fixes involved far fewer vehicles: 455,901. All told, Ward’s says automakers issued 130 recalls in 2011, down from 136 campaigns in the U.S. last year. Toyota tops recall list again in 2011, overall number of U.S.

Is Japan’s Prius Cup the world’s most boring form of motorsports?

Filed under: Motorsports , Hybrid , Japan , Toyota Drivers in Japan have once again taken to the track in an effort to wring maximum mileage from their Toyota hybrids. According to AutoWeek , the Prius Cup resumed this year after a two-year hiatus. Toyota officials said they have no plans to bring the hybrid competition to the U.S., but played up their promises to compete and win at Le Mans next June with a hybrid . Dealerships fielded teams at Fuji Speedway in Oyama, Japan, for a national championship race held on December 7. Puttering around the Formula 1 track at Fuji, at least one team managed an astounding 80 miles per gallon in their hypermiling efforts, according to the report. But is it really racing when the drivers are attempting to maintain an average speed of 37 miles per hour and coasting up hills? We will give them credit though – at least they do turn both left and right. Filed under: Coupe , Performance , Etc. , Japan , Videos , Toyota Toyota is out to draw parallels between the company’s new GT86 sports car and some of the legends of the automaker’s past. A new video depicting the new coupe’s development spends plenty of time with the GT86 on screen with the likes of the Toyota Sports 800 and even the AE86. Those are both fine sparring partners for a vehicle that prides itself on superior handling over outright brawn. Watching engineers cane the GT86 around the world’s various road courses only stokes our desire for a little more time with the either of the two-door’s corporate cousins. As you may recall, the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ both left favorable impressions on us during our recent drives, but we could use a full week’s worth of sideways action to figure out whether those pieces of hardware are worthy of sharing tarmac with the likes of the legendary AE86. Hit the jump to take a look. Continue reading Toyota GT86 spends time with its ancestors Toyota GT86 spends time with its ancestors originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 19:59:00 EST. Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Hybrid , Toyota , Electric Toyota is bringing a new concept to the 2012 Detroit Auto Show . The company calls its NS4 showcar an “advanced” plug-in hybrid , though it hasn’t shared any more information beyond the vehicle’s name. While we can’t say for certain, odds are the concept will give us a glimpse of what the company has planned for future hybrid design instead of boasting any tangible next-generation technology. As you may recall, Toyota and BMW recently partnered up to create a new lithium-ion battery pack, so it may be some time before we see the tech debut, even in a concept vehicle. Toyota has also made it clear the company will bring along the Prius C , which will make its North American debut at the Detroit show (see gallery below). The Prius C rides on a platform about the same size as the Yaris , but comes packing a hybrid drivetrain. Word has it the vehicle will come with Prius-besting EPA fuel economy figures, too. Hit the jump for the brief press release, and stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the Detroit show.
