Filed under: Sedan , Toyota Like its Cressida ancestor, Toyota’s Avalon has long focused on easy living comfort and value over sex appeal. Conservative sheetmetal, a cushy ride, space to spread out and general ease-of-use have historically made the brand’s largest sedan popular among the elderly. But the new 2013 Avalon brings with it markedly more expressive styling that suggests Toyota is no longer content to cater to the end-of-life demographic. This shift away from a more traditional value set to edgier design and content is one the entire large non-premium sedan segment seems to be embracing – witness the newly upscale 2014 Chevrolet Impala , as well as the sculpted flanks of the 2012 Hyundai Azera and Ford Taurus . The 2013 model’s noticeably svelter sheetmetal, with its bolder front end and flowing greenhouse announce Toyota’s intent, but it’s features like a Sport mode and paddle shifters that really telegraph the Avalon’s newfound vigor and more aspirational mission. And Toyota officials tell Autoblog that the already-shown V6 and hybrid models are just the beginning – a stand-alone sport model is also under serious consideration. A trio of Avalon concepts is headed to SEMA this October, with two of them having been completed internally – unusual for Toyota. According to Randy Stephens, the model’s chief engineer, a trio of Avalon concepts is headed to SEMA this October, with two of them having been completed internally – unusual for Toyota. The pair of concepts conceived in-house will have a performance bent, with at least one featuring an off-the-shelf supercharger from the company’s TRD parts bin in Australia (the same forced-induction setup used in the Lotus Evora S ). The house-built Avalons are said to not be as outrageously styled as most SEMA vehicles tend to be, in large measure because Toyota plans to weigh public opinion with an eye toward a production run.

Proving that the 2013 Toyota Auris has depths we haven’t begun to comprehend, Toyota’s Japanese ad agency has followed up the head-turning spot with Stav Strashko by kitting an Auris out with “spanking machines” and putting it on display at the Daikanyama Art Street festival. The machines are computer-controlled hands that tap (or spank, if you prefer) the car to the programmed beat. As if that weren’t enough, two pairs of free-standing hands, with arms, clap time at either end of the car. If there’s a meaning to it, we’re not aware of it, but it’s fascinating to watch. It isn’t often – actually, never – that we get to say, “Ladies and gentlemen, we present The Spankers.” You’ll find them below , and the action begins in the first video at the 2:40 mark. Filed under: Truck , Work , Ford , Toyota , Volkswagen , Holden , Australia , Diesel PickupTrucks.com has turned to its friends in Australia for a look at a few of the most popular midsize pickups found Down Under. The result is the Global Pickup Shootout that pits the reigning-champion Toyota Hilux against the Holden Colorado , Volkswagen Amarok and the Ford Ranger . Each truck was faced with a battery of tests that included on-road and off-road performance as well as design and value evaluations. How did the results shake out? The Toyota Hilux, which hasn’t seen a significant update since 2005, is clearly starting to show its age. The truck consistently found itself at the back of the pack, which resulted in a fourth-place finish overall with 29 points. By comparison, the third-place Volkswagen Amarok performed well in the overall value and design segments, but fell behind elsewhere. The German pickup took home 34 points in the evaluation. The real story here is just how close the first, second and third-place finishers were in the shootout. The Holden Colorado went home with just two more points than the Amarok, thanks largely to its first-place off-road performance, but fell to the Ford Ranger by just one point.

In the 2012 edition of the study, Volkswagen Group of America achieved the highest rating in Total Quality. This marks the German automaker’s second year of achieving the accolade. According to the press release from Strategic Vision, the runner up spot was actually a tie between Chrysler Group and Ford Motor Company. Strategic Vision factored in vehicles like the Audi A4 and A8 , as well as notable VW vehicles like the Golf , Eos , and Tiguan in its study. The study also pointed to the quality of vehicles like the Flex , F-150 , as well as the Fiat 500 for such a tight finish between Ford and Chrysler. Toyota came out with the fewest reported problems of any brand. According to the study, only 17% of Toyota owners reported having problems. Strategic vision says this was its closest finish in “Total Quality” that it has ever reported. According to the release, “Customers are increasingly defining ‘quality’ holistically and using Total Quality in their decisions.” In assessing the Total Quality Awards, Strategic Vision calculated the results from surveys sent out to 45,390 individuals who purchased new 2012 model year vehicles from September to December of 2011.

According to an Automotive News report, Toyota filed a complaint with the U.S. District Court in Lexington, Kentucky late last week. The complaint was filed against former IT contractor Ibrahimshah Shahulhameed, who Toyota says was fired on August 23. According to the filing, Toyota indicates Shahulhameed logged on to its system the evening of his firing and downloaded and printed trade secrets. One result of the filing is that Toyota has acquired a restraining order against Shahulhameed, prohibiting him from leaving the United States or disseminating the information that Toyota says is ill-gotten company property. The specific area that was hacked was ToyotaSupplier.com, a site where the automaker’s suppliers exchange highly sensitive information with Toyota about both current and future products. Toyota states that it will continue to investigate the security breach and do not yet know exactly what has happened with the confidential information. There is the possibility that it may have changed hands, but according to a Toyota manufacturing spokesman, “It’s too early to speculate on what-if’s.” According to the court documents, Shahulhameed is an Indian citizen who was living in Georgetown, Kentucky, and was apparently about to leave for his native India.
