But to help buyers counter this to the best of their abilities, ALG has released its 14th annual list of best bets for retained value. Toyota stands out from the crowd with nine total awards on the list, including its Scion and Lexus brands. But Honda took the top spot among mainstream brands with Hyundai second and Scion third. Subaru is fourth and Mazda fifth. In the premium brand rankings, Acura is ranked Number One, while Infiniti and Audi bring up second and third. In fourth place is Lexus and in fifth, Mercedes-Benz . Chevrolet is listed as number fifteen – last place on the mainstream list, while Lincoln is at the bottom of premium brands in tenth position. “Hyundai’s ascent as a brand is nothing short of impressive,” said Larry Dominique, president of ALG in a press release. “Since 2007, when the brand ranked in the bottom quartile for residual value, Hyundai has delivered well-executed product, and has kept incentives and fleet – two elements that can quickly damage residual value – in check.

Filed under: LA Auto Show , Crossover , Toyota Toyota is ready to unveil the 2014 RAV4 at this year’s LA Auto Show later this week, but it appears a few photos of the new crossover have already hit the web. The crew at CarStyleBlog.com has gotten its hands on a small batch of interior and exterior shots that seem to detail the new Honda CR-V fighter. The site also has a few images of a lightly camouflaged version in what looks to be a production facility, complete with interior photos as well. Judging by the teaser video we’ve already seen, this looks to be the real deal. Buyers can expect to find substantially updated aesthetics inside and out. We’ve reached out to Toyota to confirm whether or not these photos are genuine. We’ll update this post as soon as we hear back. Word has it Toyota will abandon the V6 engine option in favor of a more efficient four-cylinder for 2014. Likewise, engineers have scrapped the old four-speed automatic transmission for a six-speed unit. Otherwise, details are scarce.

Filed under: Sedan , Safety , Technology , Toyota , Luxury Automotive News Europe reports that Toyota is set to debut a pair of pre-crash safety systems. The company hopes the tech will help reduce the likelihood of high-speed crashes and accidents caused by pedal misapplication . One of the systems uses millimeter-wave radar to calculate the risk of a collision. Like the Volvo City Safety technology, when the vehicle senses an impending crash, it alerts the driver with both audio and visual cues. A new brake booster can then be activated to help deliver twice the braking force typically available. Toyota also hopes to prevent parking collisions with an additional automatic braking system. Using sonar, the vehicle can detect whether the car is approaching a stationary obstacle too quickly and apply the brakes as necessary. It also features a fail-safe that will automatically slow the vehicle if the driver shifts gears while the accelerator is applied or “abnormal shifting” is detected. Word has it the manufacturer will debut the tech on a “high-end Toyota-brand sedan,” but specifics beyond that are not known. It’s actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine’s Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every penny free second. Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S , Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86 , BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911 , Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3 , the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra . After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time. You’ll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like “Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways” in the video below .

Japanese automakers ramping production for renewed American sales

Filed under: Car Buying , Japan , Plants/Manufacturing , Honda , Mitsubishi , Nissan , Toyota The 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan took quite the toll on the automotive industry in that nation. Not content to lean on that tragedy as excuse for slagging sales, the Japanese automakers are planning on a major production expansion in North America. The aim is to reclaim the market share lost from the Tsunami-based dip, and overcome a dollar/yen exchange rate that makes exporting to America unprofitable. Following the Tsunami, Japanese automakers ramped up production in their North American facilities to compensate, but according to Automotive News , Nissan , Honda and others have all reported plans for still-further increased production in the year ahead. As part of this ramp-up, Mazda will open a facility in Salamnca, Mexico before March of 2014. Part of that increase in output is 50,000 units of a Toyota-badged compact car, which Mazda will produce . Other Mexican production facilities opening include a Honda plant, which will open in Spring 2014 in Celaya, and a Nissan plant, set to open later this year in Aguascalientes. Nissan also said that it will need another plant in North America within the next five years. According to Nissan Boss Carlos Ghosn, the company aims to raise its stake in the US market from 8 percent to 10, and adding production will help achieve that goal. Even Mitsubishi is aiming to boost production at its Normal, Illinois plant.

Filed under: Hybrid , Hatchback , Toyota The National Insurance Crime Bureau has taken a closer look at how often car thieves target the Toyota Prius . As it turns out, the most popular hybrid on US roads has a very low theft rate, and when it does get stolen, law enforcement are quick to return the machine to its rightful owners. All told, 2008-2012 Prius models saw a theft rate of one in 606 vehicles compared to one in 78 for all models on the road from the same model year period. Just 2,439 Prius hybrids were stolen in the US between September 4, 2000 and June 30, 2012. Not surprisingly, California holds the dubious honor of taking the lion’s share of those thefts, with 1,062. Florida took second place with 127, followed by New York, Washington and Texas. Toyota has sold 1.2 million Prius models in the US, which means the vehicle constitutes more than half of all hybrid vehicles on the road today. You can take a look at the full NICB press release below for more information.
