YouTube’s Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Audi , Mercedes-Benz , Toyota , Volkswagen After Sunday’s big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation’s water cooler on Monday, and it’s got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff. As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers. Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views – six million and counting – among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing , which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi’s Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen’s slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco’s commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below . The data above is current and official as of 10:00 AM EST today, though things are changing quickly.

Filed under: Ford , Toyota Ford landed itself a spot among the top 10 brands in the 2012 Buzz Rankings. The annual index scores 1,100 brands in 41 categories to determine which nameplates had the most positive buzz throughout the year. For the third year in a row, Subway took the top honors overall with a score of 40.3, and Ford was the only automaker to break into the top 25 by earning a sixth-place finish overall. The manufacturer earned a score of 32.1 points, which was enough to push it up one spot from the 2011 Buzz Rankings. Honda managed 21.2 points overall, which is still well behind 25th-place Kohl’s at 26.5 points. Toyota , Volkswagen and BMW all round out the top five automakers. The 2012 Buzz Rankings also keep track of which brands improved the most over the past year, and this year, Toyota was the manufacturer with the largest leap forward. The Japanese automaker jumped from just 14 points in 2011 to 20.5 in 2012. Chrysler, Kia, Dodge and Volkswagen all saw sizable steps forward as well. Toyota announces two recalls affecting 1M Corolla, Matrix and Lexus IS models

Filed under: Sedan , Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Hatchback , Lexus , Toyota The recall bug strikes Toyota again. The automaker has issued a voluntary recall of three models that, in total, represent more than one million units. Around 752,000 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla and Matrix models are being recalled for airbag concerns, while a windshield wiper issue is causing the recall for close to 270,000 Lexus IS sedans from the 2006-2012 model years. Completely unrelated to the small airbag-related recall issued earlier in the week, the Corolla and Matrix recall is caused by a faulty airbag control module that could potentially short circuit, which could lead to the front airbags or seat belt pretensioners deploying. The Lexus recall is due to a wiper arm nut that wasn’t tightened properly, which can cause the wipers to not work when trying to clear heavy buildup such as snow. Scroll down for a press release that includes more information, as well as details about how owners can contact the manufacturer directly. Filed under: Hybrid , Sedan , Toyota , New Car Reviews Giving Vanilla A Good Name “Vanilla.” Taken in modern context, that’s not a compliment, but it should be. Vanilla actually has exotic origins, and as spices go, only saffron is more costly. Despite the realities, calling something “vanilla” is not whistling in admiration. The Toyota Camry has been called “vanilla” countless times since its debut, but both the car and the bean have something up their sleeves. Scoff all you want, but vanilla is the most popular ice cream flavor, and there is no mainstream sedan that outsells the Camry. Apparently, vanilla has an underlying tinge of filthy lucre. We didn’t feel rich, exactly, wheeling around in the Camry Hybrid, but we came away impressed, nonetheless. “When I go to an ice cream parlor for the first time, I always order their vanilla,” says Ralph Hannabury. Why vanilla? “When you’re making ice cream, everything builds off vanilla.

Redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra spied testing in Canada

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Spy Photos , Truck , Toyota When Toyota first announced that it would be bringing the 2014 Tundra pickup to next month’s Chicago Auto Show , we weren’t quite sure if the truck would fall into the “all-new” or “refreshed” category. After seeing this latest set of spy shots, we’re striking “all-new” from the record, but the enhancements do appear to be more than just a simple nip/tuck. While the overall shape and greenhouse haven’t really changed, heavy cladding found on the front fascia suggests that a totally redesigned nose is in store, with a fully reworked grille flanked by new headlamps. Smaller styling details are hidden by the big panels of camouflage, but we anticipate a few minor tweaks to the rest of the pickup’s design when all that black tape finally comes off. Mum’s the word on powertrain enhancements (if any), as well as any changes that have been made to the chassis. But with the updated 2013 Ram 1500 already on the street, the recent unveiling of the updated 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins, and a preview of what’s to come from the likes of Ford , we certainly hope Toyota has injected enough new blood into its 2014 model year pickup to keep it competitive in this American-dominated segment. We’ll know for sure come Chicago. Redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra spied testing in Canada originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 17:25:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Toyota reclaims global sales crown, GM and VW not far behind

Filed under: Car Buying , Toyota TheDetroitBureau.com reports Toyota has retaken the global sales crown. The Japanese automaker turned out 9.75 million vehicles last year, putting it just ahead of General Motors , with 9.29 million vehicles. Volkswagen , meanwhile, filled out the podium by building 9.1 million units in 2012. Still, Toyota numbers fell just below projections the automaker made earlier in the year, due largely to a fierce territorial dispute between Japan and China that has seen mainland buyers shun Japanese goods. But the news marks a substantial comeback for Toyota. The company fell to third place in the global production race in 2011 after tragic earthquake and tsunami caused several plant closures. In Japan, Toyota enjoyed a sales increase of 35 percent over the previous year, while the company’s worldwide sales jumped by 23 percent thanks in part to new additions to the Prius line. The automaker is forecasting yet another increase for 2013, with the company projecting to reach 9.91 million units this year. Neither Volkswagen nor GM have released their own projections just yet.
