Filed under: Green , Toyota , Hybrid When the designers thought they were just about finished with the new look of the fourth-generation Toyota Prius hybrid, higher-ups did not like what they saw and sent those designers back to the proverbial drawing board to come up with something a little spicier. Duly inspired, the designers came up with something last spring that may look a bit like the C-HR crossover concept , Automotive News says. For those looking for a Prius design with a little more bite, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Recharge Wrap-up: Honda FCV Concept comes to Detroit, Toyota seeks young green energy fellows

December 20, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Green , Detroit Auto Show , Honda , Mercedes-Benz , Toyota , Electric , Hydrogen Honda will bring its FCV Concept to the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The hydrogen-powered concept made its Japanese debut in November, and will now make its way to North America for the first time. The FCV concept improves upon the design of the FCX Clarity with a more striking appearance and roomier interior. Its smaller powertrain packaging means more space for people, and the FCV Concept seats five passengers. Honda also expects the next-generation fuel-cell car, which is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in March 2016, to cost less and have a range of over 300 miles. Read more in the press release below . Honda Civic losing ground to Toyota Corolla, sales crown threatened

Honda Civic losing ground to Toyota Corolla, sales crown threatened

December 18, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Car Buying , Honda , Toyota , Earnings/Financials , Ownership Oh, what a difference a year has made. When the numbers were tallied for 2013, the Honda Civic was riding high by claiming its segment’s sales crown in the US despite being challenged by the latest generation of the Toyota Corolla for part of the year. However, with just a month to go in the battle for C-segment supremacy in 2014, it looks like Toyota gets to hoist the trophy this time. Looking at November sales numbers, Honda moved 300,644 Civics through the first 11 months of the year, down 2.1 percent in volume. Furthermore, for the month alone, the company sold 23,060 Civics, a 12.3 percent drop. Meanwhile, on Toyota’s side, business has been booming comparatively. Through the first 11 months it sold 309,373 Corollas, a 10.6 percent jump, and for November alone it moved 25,609 examples, a 14.2 percent improvement. With fewer than 10,000 cars between them, it would take quite a December slump for the Corolla to lose this fight. According to The Truth About Cars , the Civic actually started out the 2014 somewhat positively with 5 percent growth over the previous year, though still behind the Corolla’s figures . However, the Honda has seen a slide since then with five consecutive months of sales drops.

2016 Toyota Tacoma teased again

2016 Toyota Tacoma teased again

December 18, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Truck , Toyota , Design/Style Toyota is following up its muddy teaser of the back of the 2016 Tacoma with a dusty new one that shows the truck’s face for the first time. Without seeing more of the pickup, it’s impossible to make any educated judgments, but the company appears to be taking the Taco’s styling in a new direction. The 2016 Tacoma features a hexagonal grille outlined in chrome and a narrow intake underneath visually connecting the foglights. The headlights take on a squinting look, and this shot suggests LED running lights at the outer edge (perhaps just for top-level trims). You can also just make out a bit boxier of a flare for the front fender. The truckmaker hasn’t announced anything about the Tacoma’s powertrain, but we spied a prototype testing several months ago with a six-speed manual transmission. That one reportedly rode on a modified version of the current model’s frame, as well. Toyota apparently has high hopes, though, because it’s ramping up production at the Taco’s factory in Mexico by 41 percent . The truck debuts at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show on January 12, and you can read Toyota’s to-the-point press release about it below . 10 automakers shack up in Detroit hotel to talk Takata airbags

10 automakers shack up in Detroit hotel to talk Takata airbags

Filed under: Recalls , Safety , BMW , Chrysler , Ford , GM , Honda , Mazda , Mitsubishi , Nissan , Subaru , Toyota Since Takata has decided not to take the lead concerning potential issues with its airbag inflators, the automakers have. Perhaps that’s unsurprising, since it’s the automakers, not Takata, that will take a beating on the dealership floor if consumers decide its models are a health hazards. The Detroit News reports that Toyota , Honda , General Motors , Ford , Chrysler , Mazda , BMW , Nissan , Mitsubishi and Subaru met in a hotel conference room near the Detroit Metropolitan Airport last week to sort out a way to understand the technical issues involved. So far, faulty airbag inflators have been ruled the cause of five deaths and 50 injuries around the world, but neither Takata nor investigators understands exactly why the inflators are malfunctioning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently asked Takata to issue a national recall , Takata declined , citing a minuscule failure rate and the fact that it’s still investigating the issue. Toyota and Honda then made an industry-wide appeal for “a coordinated, comprehensive testing program” that would pinpoint the problem inflators and get them replaced, and that’s what the Detroit meeting was about. Numerous issues, however, will make this a long row to hoe: simply getting the parts to replace the nearly 20 million inflators in cars recalled around the world so far – even working with other suppliers – will take a years , but more importantly, no one knows if the replacement inflators currently being installed will suffer the same issue. Answers will hopefully come quickly with Takata, the ten automakers and NHTSA all independently investigating the problem. 10 automakers shack up in Detroit hotel to talk Takata airbags originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Dec 2014 14:58:00 EST. Toyota confirms 2016 Tacoma for Detroit

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Truck , Toyota , Off-Road A week on from an announcement by Toyota’s Bob Carter, the Japanese marque has formally announced that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma will make its global debut next month at the 2015 North American International Auto Show . Not only that, but the company has given us a very minute (and very muddy) teaser image, showing the truck’s tailgate and driver’s side taillight. Like its big brother, the Tundra , the 2016 Tacoma will feature its name embossed on its tailgate. Beyond that, though, there’s really not much to be gleaned from this sole teaser shot. Of course, we’ll have much, much more on the next-generation Taco when it arrives in a month’s time. Until then, check out Toyota’s hilariously brief and to-the-point press release, available below.
