Toyota details plans for October sales growth

Filed under: Toyota , Earnings/Financials Toyota saw another unfortunate month of sales in September. The automaker saw its sales figures fall by 18 percent compared to the same time last year, thanks largely to lower-than-average dealer inventory brought on by this year’s earthquake and tsunami disasters. Toyota sold 121,451 vehicles in the U.S. last month across its three brands. The company moved 147,162 vehicles during the month of September last year. Even so, the automaker says that October will show sales improvements, according to Automotive News . Bob Carter , group vice president of Toyota Motor Sales, said that right now, U.S. dealers have a 30-day supply of vehicles, and that inventory will continue to grow in the coming months. Carter also underscored the fact that his company would reverse a five-month trend of sales losses in October and once again post gains. That’s likely to be true given that the 2012 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid are likely to bring in buyers as well as the company’s Prius V .

Toyota Ukraine reveals new Camry for other parts of the world

Filed under: Sedan , Europe , Toyota , Russia Toyota Ukraine has released the skinny on what some other parts of the world can expect to see from the 2012 Toyota Camry . It’s impossible for us to say who, besides Russia, will be getting this Camry variant, but we do clearly spot a front fascia that’s a good bit different than what’s available here in the land of the free. The lower air intake boasts a slimmer profile for less of an open-jaw look. Likewise, the rear valance has gone under the knife with additional detailing that abandons the rounded profile of the American car. The final package may be a bit more refined in style, though mechanically the two sedans remain more or less identical. Buyers in the old country can lay their hands on the same engine options as their American counterparts. Those include a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder good for 18 horsepower and a 3.5-liter V6 with a snappy 268 horsepower. Toyota calls the vehicle a “business sedan,” and according to our Google translator, prices start at $33,050. Toyota NA chairman Inaba calls Hyundai Sonata "honorable contender"

Filed under: Sedan , Hyundai , Toyota When does a mid-size sedan become a top-notch competitor to the Toyota Camry ? The answer is apparently whenever said competitor begins stealing market share from America’s top-selling sedan. Bloomberg reports that Toyota North America Chairman Yoshimi Inaba called the Hyundai Sonata “a very honorable contender in the market” during an interview earlier this week. Inaba adds that Toyota has great respect for the strong-selling Hyundai, and we’re guessing they’re not the only automaker keeping an ever closer eye on Camp Hyundai. Sales of the Sonata soared by 35 percent in 2010 to 196,623 units. Meanwhile, 2010 Camry sales dropped by 31 percent to 327,804 units. To make matters worse for Toyota and the Camry, supply disruptions stemming from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami have further hurt Camry sales while the Sonata continues to attract new buyers. In fact, the Sonata outsold the Camry in May, in part because of Toyota’s production issues. But while the Sonata has been gaining on the Camry, that trend could reverse itself with an all-new Camry set to arrive later this year. Toyota President Akio Toyoda already told U.S.
