SEMA isn’t just about tuning no-brainers like the Ford Mustang and Scion FR-S , it’s about showing what’s possible for a wide variety of cars, even seemingly geriatric machines like the big Avalon. But remember, Toyota is seriously considering a sportier version of its Avalon flagship – we first brought you this news earlier in the year. And while these SEMA concepts aren’t intended for production, nobody is ruling out that something very similar might make it to showrooms in the near future. The stealth Avalon you see above is the DUB Edition, rolling on 22-inch matte black wheels and featuring a completely de-chromed exterior with blacked-out elements. The DUB Avalon doesn’t offer any tweaks to the 3.5-liter V6, but behind that tinted glass is a totally black interior with suede accents on the seats and many of the touchable surfaces. Moving on, Toyota has brought a TRD Edition Avalon that uses plenty of parts from the company’s in-house tuning catalog, and showing that even hybrids can be sporty, the Avalon HV gets a meaner, sleeker look. Filed under: Aftermarket , Sedan , Toyota , Specialty , Luxury Now that we’ve waved goodbye to the Lincoln Town Car , there’s a big ol’ hole in the automotive market for new livery vehicles – you know, the blacked-out hire cars frequently seen idling outside of airport terminals and hotels. Cadillac has announced that its XTS flagship will be offered with a factory livery package , and other American automakers like Chrysler and Lincoln have entered this luxury fleet segment as well. But it won’t stop there. During our first drive of the 2013 Avalon , Toyota officials confirmed that the company will offer a livery edition of its new large sedan. As expected, the livery edition will have a black-on-black color scheme and will offer heated seats and individual heating and cooling controls for rear seat passengers, deleting the front heated seats in the process. (Sorry, Jeeves.) Two different Avalon livery models will be produced – a V6 model based on the XLE trim and a hybrid version based on the XLE Premium grade. With its 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, the gasoline-electric Avalon is rated at 40 miles per gallon combined. That’s certainly an improvement over the old 19-mpg Town Car. Toyota spokesperson Moe Durand confirmed to Autoblog that the Avalon livery car will be available to order through the brand’s entire dealer network. That said, Toyota isn’t expecting huge sales numbers for its package – “500 to 1000 units in first year,” says Durand.

Conservative sheetmetal, a cushy ride, space to spread out and general ease-of-use have historically made the brand’s largest sedan popular among the elderly. But the new 2013 Avalon brings with it markedly more expressive styling that suggests Toyota is no longer content to cater to the end-of-life demographic. This shift away from a more traditional value set to edgier design and content is one the entire large non-premium sedan segment seems to be embracing – witness the newly upscale 2014 Chevrolet Impala , as well as the sculpted flanks of the 2012 Hyundai Azera and Ford Taurus . The 2013 model’s noticeably svelter sheetmetal, with its bolder front end and flowing greenhouse announce Toyota’s intent, but it’s features like a Sport mode and paddle shifters that really telegraph the Avalon’s newfound vigor and more aspirational mission. And Toyota officials tell Autoblog that the already-shown V6 and hybrid models are just the beginning – a stand-alone sport model is also under serious consideration. The house-built Avalons are said to not be as outrageously styled as most SEMA vehicles tend to be, in large measure because Toyota plans to weigh public opinion with an eye toward a production run.
Filed under: New York Auto Show , Sedan , Toyota When we read through the press materials for the new 2013 Toyota Avalon , we had to double-check… had we downloaded the release for the wrong car? Because right here it says, “In Sport mode, throttle response is enhanced and steering effort is weighted… to offer a sportier character.” And what’s this about paddle shifters? This is the Avalon, the car that replaced the Mercury Grand Marquis in the hearts, minds and garages of Florida retirees. But yes, we had the right car. Apparently Toyota is serious about developing more interesting and youthful products, and it’s off to a good start with the Avalon, based on what we have heard and seen at the New York Auto Show today. The car was developed, styled and engineered in the United States, and it will be built here too, at Toyota’s Georgetown, KY, plant. While that doesn’t mean much without a product that can deliver the goods, we like most of what we see. From the A-pillar on back, the new Avalon looks long and sleek and seems to have a lot of BMW inspiration in its design.

It isn’t immediately clear if the vehicle will be a concept or production car, but Toyota has issued no showcar qualifiers, suggesting it’s something that will be in dealers soon. Described as having “an elegant yet athletic look,” the teased rear end most likely belongs to the next-generation Avalon full-size sedan. While we can’t be sure until the wraps are removed in New York, the Avalon is our best guess based on descriptions of the redesigned Avalon from Toyota dealers who were shown it last year in June. The dealers drew comparisons between the redesigned Avalon and upscale cars like the Audi A7 and Jaguar XJ , suggesting it will transition from a traditional sedan to a four-door coupe shape. The teaser image provided today by Toyota supports this, showing a severely sloped C-pillar and little-to-no rear deck. And while the cut lines for the trunk aren’t visible in this rendering, we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a hatch.
