Toyota returning to Le Mans with hybrid LMP1 car

Filed under: Motorsports , Hybrid , Toyota , Racing Toyota has announced that it is returning to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s World Endurance Championship in 2012. The car it will be contesting the series with is a new prototype that will use a hybrid gasoline/electric powertrain. We can only hope the experience will equal more exciting future models under the Prius range… The last time Toyota competed in Le Mans racing was in 1999, just before the Japanese automaker abandoned the GT-One program to focus on Formula One. We don’t expect Toyota’s new LMP1 racer to have anything in common with the erstwhile GT-One, which was powered by a 600-horsepower 3.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. Though always fast, Toyota’s last-gen endurance racer never quite put together a complete race. Here’s hoping the effort produces more consistent results this time around. Check out the official announcement after the break . How to unbox the 2012 Toyota Yaris

Filed under: Budget , Etc. , Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Hatchback , Toyota For a while there, we were worried that inane unboxing videos were going to completely take over the internet. Thankfully, that eventuality has not come to pass… but there’s still the occasional product so looked-forward-to, so unbelievably awesome, that its very first reveal into the world simply must be shared. You know, like the 2012 Toyota Yaris . Uh-huh. As you’ll see, the latest Yaris comes tightly packed in multiple protective containers, and there’s an appropriately huge user’s manual to go along with it. We’re especially fond of the honkable horn and the burrito-sized glove box. You just never know when you need an extra burrito… Check out the complete unboxing video from Toyota after the break .

The 2011 Acura TL , Dodge Challenger R/T , GMC Terrain SLE-2 , Hyundai Azera Limited , Toyota Tacoma Double Cab V6 Manual and Toyota Venza I4 AWD all made the cut. While low first-year depreciation rates factor into which vehicles win out in the report, NADA Guides also evaluates vehicles based on criteria like whether or not a model is competitively priced, is available with incentives or rebates, and dealer inventory volumes. Surprisingly enough, the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T carried the lowest first-year depreciation rate of all the vehicles on the list. With a rate of just 8 percent, the Mopar muscle car beat out the vehicle with the next-lowest rate – the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab V6 Manual – by two percentage points. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Azera limited packed the highest depreciation rate among the vehicles on the list at 21 percent, followed by the Acura TL at 19 percent. Toyota Plug-In Prius reservations start on Earth Day (sorry, Hawaii)

Toyota Plug-In Prius reservations start on Earth Day (sorry, Hawaii)

Filed under: Car Buying , Hybrid , Hatchback , Toyota , Electric Plug-in Prius – Click above for high-res image gallery If the idea of getting around 83 or 87 miles per gallon in a plug-in Toyota Prius suits your fancy, then get ready to give Toyota your pertinent details on Earth Day. That’s this Friday, April 22nd, by the way, and Toyota announced it will use the event to open up a “Priority Registration Web Site” for the Prius Plug-In. Of course, since this is a limited program, the ordering system will be, well, limited. On Earth Day, “Priority Registration” will start here . This doesn’t mean that you are in line for a Prius Plug-In. Instead, it means that you’re allowed “first access to the Online Order System when it becomes available later in the year.” Still, at least that’s something. Oh, and the Prius will only be available at dealers in 15 launch states – Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington – when it hits the market in spring of 2012. For some reason, online ordering will not be available in Hawaii. See the full press release after the break .
