Americans and Italians worried that two of their nation’s industrial icons – Chrysler and Fiat – are merging into a British/Dutch corporation with a blurred identity can rest a bit easier, even as an initial public stock offering looms as early as October. Chrysler will still be run mostly out of its headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI, and Fiat will be based in Turin, Italy. “Operationally, day-to-day operations will sit where they sit today,” Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne said during an earnings announcement earlier this summer. The company will be incorporated in the Netherlands for tax purposes, and the board will meet in London, where unspecified parts of the firm’s “decision-making process” will take place. “Operationally, London will hold nothing, other than the decision-making process of FCA, meetings of the group executive council and some of the senior leaders will be residing there,” Marchionne said. Specifically, Richard Palmer, FCA’s chief financial officer and a native of Bath, England, will move to London. Still, Marchionne stressed the company’s move to London is more than symbolic, even if some functions are still unclear. “It’s a pretty permanent rooting of the organization in London in order to make sure that the machine runs,” he said. Filed under: Coupe , Performance , Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Toyota , UK A ban has reportedly been issued on a UK commercial for the Toyota GT86 (know as the Scion FR-S here in the US) that supposedly might “encourage motorists to drive irresponsibly,” because it “condoned dangerous driving.” The commercial, known as “The Real Deal,” in question has very clearly made an effort to distance itself from any kind of illicit real-world driving, as Toyota is fully aware that British laws forbids that kind of advertising. Toyota reportedly told Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority that it did not, in fact, condone unsafe or irresponsible driving, and that its commercial – which features a digital man in a sort of Dystopian “video game” world – is impossible to reproduce under real-world conditions. Toyota UK has not, as of this writing, felt compelled to remove the advertisement from its YouTube page , meaning you are at liberty to watch it for yourself below . At least here in The States, we consider it extremely “safe for work” – just don’t try this on the road, hotshot. Toyota is bringing back its Team Toyota GB livery for the GT 86 entry into the Britcar 24 Hours. Unlike the the classically decorated 918 , we can confirm that the so-hot-right-now Toyota coupe will actually be racing. The livery harkens back to the AE86 of the raging 80s for the Japanese-British race team. Successfully campaigned by Tiff Needell and others, it took on the likes of an Atari-sponsored Mitsubishi Starion . How’s that for getting your 80s fix? Team Toyota GB ran with great success in the British Touring Car and British Rally Championships in the 80s and early 90s. In fact, it’s Toyota itself that will be bringing the Avensis back to its home market from its global assembly plant in the UK. Demand for European cars in Japan has got Toyota cashing in on the game, exporting as many as 750 units of the Avensis back to the home country. Since the Avensis holds a similar position to the JDM Toyota Mark X , which is available only as a sedan, Toyota will only be offering the Avensis wagon back in Japan, packing a 2.0-liter four mated to a CVT. Japan, of course, will only be the latest market in which the British-built Avensis will be sold, joining a list of 47 countries worldwide to which some 85% of the units built at the Derbyshire plant are exported.
