Toyota has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it has initiated a stop sale of certain Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles equipped with seat heaters in order to address a non-compliance issue.

The issue rests not with the cloth and leather covers themselves, but with a piece of seat heater beneath them that fails to meet US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for flame retardancy. There have been no reports of fires or injuries from the affected cars, which include some of Toyota’s biggest volume sellers. 2013 and 2014 Camry , Camry Hybrid , Avalon and Sienna models equipped with heated seats are included in the stop-sale, as are 2014 Tundra pickups and Corolla sedans. The exact number of vehicles with the non-compliant materials are still being tabulated, according to The Detroit Free Press . According to a Toyota spokesman, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been notified, although it remains to be seen if a recall will be issued. Outside of a full recall, though, it’s unclear how Toyota will deal with vehicles equipped with the flammable materials that have already found homes. In the meantime, Toyota is reportedly developing a fix for those vehicle still sitting on dealer lots. UPDATE : John Hanson, National Manager, Environmental, Quality, and Safety Communications for Lexus, has confirmed to Autoblog that no Lexus models are affected by this seat fabric issue. Holden has already confirmed it will stay the course despite Ford’s exit . Much of the GM subsidiary’s reason for sticking around has to do with a deal made last year between Holden and the Australian government. In order to secure a GM investment of $1 billion and a commitment to keep manufacturing in Australia through 2022, the government threw in an extra $215 million. According to Australia’s Minister for Innovation and Industry, Greg Combet, the government is now in talks with Toyota for a similar deal. Toyota operates one plant in Australia, the Altona manufacturing and engine plant in Victoria. The facility produces the Camry , Camry Hybrid and Australasia-only Aurion for both the local market and export. The report from GoAuto indicates that negotiations with the Australian government would include adding production of a third, all-new model at Altona, possibly the new RAV4 , because it shares many parts with the Camry. Mr. Combet did not say what amount the government would be willing to offer in exchange for an investment by Toyota and commitment to continue manufacturing in Australia, or whether it would be more or less than the Holden deal, but did confirm the talks were happening.

Thus, Toyota has responded after just one model year, updating both materials and features on its gas-powered and hybrid family sedans for 2013. The LE version appeared to get the lion’s share of the improvements. Specifically, the LE is getting “soft-touch” door materials as well as armrests that match the rest of the interior color (instead of being black). The LE model also gets Toyota’s six-inch display screen that helps folks get a better gander at the car’s energy usage and fuel economy, among other things. Other changes include adding cross-traffic alert for models equipped with blind spot monitoring Toyota introduced its latest version of the Camry and Camry Hybrid in the fall of 2011 as a 2012 model. Sales have been solid, and in particular, the Camry Hybrid has improved its fortunes, bumping its US sales almost fivefold to more than 45,000 units. So far in 2013, the latter has carried over much of that momentum, boosting January 2013 sales from a year earlier by 81 percent to 3,826 units. Looking for more details? The Avalon Hybrid, in Classic Silver, represented 26 years of North American Toyota production. The Avalon was the latest of 1.2 million of that model produced at the Kentucky plant and one of the 9.2 million total cars built there. The plant is Toyota’s largest outside Japan and employs 6,600 workers who build the Camry , Camry Hybrid, Avalon and Venza . Georgetown also makes four- and six-cylinder engines for various Toyotas. In July, Cars.com said the Kentucky-built Camry was the ” most American vehicle sold today .” In addition, the facility builds the Sienna minivan, which also made the list. In attendance to see the milestone Avalon roll off the assembly line was Kentucky governor, Steve Beshear, as well as John Calipari, the University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach. The automaker says the driver’s side power window master switch may develop a sticky or notchy feel during operation, and that if owners or technicians apply commercial lubricant, the switch my smoke or catch fire. The recall covers certain Yaris , RAV4 , Tundra , Camry , Camry Hybrid , Highlander , Highlander Hybrid, Sequoia , Corolla and Matrix models as well as Scion xD and xA units. All vehicles fall between the model years 2007 and 2009. Over 200 incidents involving the switches have been reported in the US alone, though the trouble hasn’t caused any accidents or injuries. Toyota technicians will inspect, disassemble and apply special flourine grease to the switches free of charge. Owners can expect to receive a recall notice starting later this month.
