2013 Toyota RAV4 earns ‘poor’ rating in IIHS small overlap crash test [w/video]

Filed under: Safety , Videos , Crossover , Toyota When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested a batch of SUVs in its small overlap frontal crash test earlier this year, it held off on putting the Toyota RAV4 in the blender because the new, 2013 model was due to arrive shortly after the test. The new crossover might be better than it was before, but it could still only manage a rating of “Poor” in the test that has been a bugbear for a number of manufacturers. Among other issues, the IIHS noted that the steering column moved seven inches to the right causing the crash test dummy to practically miss the airbag, the dummy’s left foot was trapped in deformed sheetmetal and the dummy’s head hit the instrument panel. The 2013 RAV4 earned the Top Safety Pick rating by scoring well in the Institute’s four other tests. A good score in this particular test would have earned it the Top Safety Pick+ rating that is so far only claimed by the 2014 Subaru Forester and 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in the SUV category. There’s a press release below with more details and a video of the test. Watch a Toyota Highlander ram a house, twice [UPDATE]

April 17, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Safety , Videos , Crossover , Toyota Toyota has had plenty of problems in recent years due to claims of unintended acceleration , and now here’s a video that actually catches such a claim on video. The driver of this 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander claims that the crossover’s accelerator got stuck causing the vehicle to slam into the house twice, and resulting in damage to the Highlander, the house and two vehicles inside the garage. While we don’t know when this accident took place, the video was uploaded to YouTube back in January. It is impossible to determine what actually happened in this video, but what we do know is that a security camera captures the Highlander slowly pulling into the driveway before it lunges forward slamming into the garage. With the tires squealing and metal crunching, the driver then shifts between reverse and drive a couple times causing even more property damage before spinning out in the street and finally being able to shift into Park. Scroll down to see the video for yourself. Whether unintended acceleration or driver error, this was undoubtedly a harrowing ordeal. UPDATE from Toyota: “Toyota’s technical team reviewed this incident and found the Event Data Recorder and the video itself confirm that the brakes were never pressed – as you can see, there are no brake lights in the video. ” Continue reading Watch a Toyota Highlander ram a house, twice [UPDATE] Watch a Toyota Highlander ram a house, twice [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Apr 2013 15:03:00 EST. Filed under: Crossover , Toyota , New Car Reviews A Nicer View Than Ever Of Middle Of The Road When we had our first shot behind the wheel of the 2013 Toyota RAV4 , the overall judgment from Managing Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski could be summed up in a sentence along the lines of, “Eh, not bad.” The truth is that the compact crossover segment, now filled with not-so-compact offerings, is as cutthroat as any in the industry these days. When a heavyweight player like the RAV4 comes to market with a new generation, it is not at liberty to start from a clean sheet, lest it throw cold water on a vehicle that sells tens of thousands of units globally every month. Like De La Soul says, “Stakes is high.” If the choices in the marketplace were still largely limited to the Honda CR-V , as was the case when this market niche was green, the Toyota offering might actually seem like the exciting choice. But with new players offering better dynamic thrills ( Mazda CX-5 ), cool turbo motors and fancy technology ( Ford Escape ), or even crunchy cred ( Subaru Forester ), the small crossover shopper is really spoiled for choice in 2013. With Mr. Korzeniewski’s excellent First Drive review covering the granularity of the RAV4 specification so well, we chose to focus our notes this time around on living with the Toyota in its natural suburban habitat for a longer stretch. What’s more, we’ll try to mark out where the CUV wins, loses or draws with the rest of the strident segment. Filed under: New York Auto Show , Coupe , Crossover , Scion , Toyota Toyota has given us a look at what the company will bring to the 2013 New York Auto Show . Visitors will get to set their eyes upon the all-new 2014 Highlander , and while the automaker isn’t saying much in the way of details, we do get the teaser you see above ( click to enlarge) to ponder on until next week. The image shows little more than a headlamp and a bit of grille, but gives us the flavor of what the crossover will bring to the table. Scion , meanwhile, says it plans to dust off the “new 2014 tC sports coupe.” While we don’t imagine the two door will have undergone a major surgery, we’re interested to see what the automaker has cooked up. The tC last endured a redesign in 2011. Check out the brief press release below and look for the vehicles to bow on March 28.Y Continue reading Toyota headed to New York with 2014 Highlander, revised Scion tC Toyota headed to New York with 2014 Highlander, revised Scion tC originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 16:29:00 EST. Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertible , Geneva Motor Show , Crossover , Hatchback , Toyota , Design/Style Automakers from around the globe are gearing up for the Geneva Motor Show next month, and Toyota is giving us a couple teasers of what will be in its display. In addition to what appears to be a single-seat concept called the i-Road (shown at right), Toyota will also give us our first look at a droptop Scion FR-S courtesy of the FT-86 Open Concept. All we have to go on right now is this sketch shown above, but we do see that this car will retain its rear seats, which could be a potential advantage over one of its key rivals, the Mazda MX-5 Miata . Toyota says that this concept will be used to gauge public interest in such a convertible, but we’ve already heard that a Scion convertible is already planned to go on sale as soon as early next year . As far as Toyota’s other concept, there also isn’t much information about the i-Road except that it will be a zero-emissions vehicle and it will have seating for two passengers, which based on the drawing will have the driver sitting in front of the passenger. Toyota will also show off the European version of the new RAV4 as well as its new Auris Touring Sports , which it refers to as a “medium-size estate.” Scroll down for Toyota’s tease of a press release. Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Crossover , Toyota , Celebrities , Humor For viewers who plan on watching the Super Bowl only for the commercials, here’s one for you to enjoy ahead of time. As we saw in the teaser video that Toyota released last week, will be making the transition from Big Bang to The Big Game as a wish-granting genie in a commercial for the 2013 Toyota RAV4 . Though not as entertaining as the actual teaser for this commercial, it still garnered a couple chuckles from the Autoblog crew. We won’t spoil it for you, but a word of advice: if Cuoco ever shows up in your driveway granting you wishes, we’d suggest you be very clear what you want… and enunciate. If you want to see the commercial before this Sunday’s game, we have the video (and an accompanying press release) posted after the jump . Filed under: Crossover , Toyota , First Drives Obsessively Maintaining the Status Quo Genchi Genbutsu and Waku-Doki . These are Japanese terms we heard quoted by Toyota representatives when describing its 2013 RAV4 . Apparently the first one means “go and see for yourself” and the second means “heart pumping, adrenaline racing.” Nice expressions, but not exactly the ones we’d choose. So we’ll introduce one of our own: “Same same but different.” The latest version of Toyota’s compact crossover follows the same basic outline of models past. As ever, its on-road ride and handling are competent but not sporty, the powertrain is smooth and efficient and the price is reasonable. It’s a tried-and-true formula, but over the last few years, new competitors like the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape have stolen the thunder of Toyota’s original cute ute, leading the automaker to refine the mix of ingredients that go into the RAV4 in an effort to take back the compact crossover crown. Read on to see what’s new. Continue reading 2013 Toyota RAV4 [w/video] 2013 Toyota RAV4 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Dec 2012 11:57:00 EST. Toyota RAV4 hybrid in development?

Toyota RAV4 hybrid in development?

December 3, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Hybrid , Technology , Crossover , Toyota Toyota may be hard at work on a new hybrid version of the RAV4 . AutoExpress reports the automaker is keeping a close eye on the CUV segment to determine whether or not buyers would be receptive to the idea of a hybrid RAV4. Yoshikazu Saeki, deputy chief engineer with the automaker, said that a hybrid iteration wouldn’t be difficult to do. Saeki spoke with AutoExpress during the LA Auto Show , and said that while Toyota has no interest in building either a seven-seat version of the RAV4 or a sportier model along the lines of the Nissan Juke , a hybrid isn’t off the table. “We are watching the market,” Saeki said. “After introducing the new RAV4 we will see. There will be a possibility of introducing a hybrid RAV4 and we will respond to what the market wants.” Than again, we’ve heard these rumblings before . Back in 2009, Toyota said almost the exact same thing after the Shanghai Motor Show three years ago. Another big batch of redesign Toyota RAV4 photos leaks out

November 27, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: LA Auto Show , Crossover , Toyota The floodgates have opened. A slew of new 2014 Toyota RAV4 photos have hit the web hot on the heels of yesterday’s leaked shots. These new images give us a better idea of what the CUV will look like inside and out. While we’re told full details will be released tomorrow, word has it the RAV4 will make use of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 178 horsepower, though buyers may also be able to opt for a 3.5-liter V6 good for 268 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission is a likely choice for gear-swapping duties, and while base models will feature a front-wheel-drive configuration, all-wheel drive will also be available. Yesterday, a spokesperson with Toyota said the company could neither confirm nor deny the validity of leaked RAV4 images. We’re guessing the company will hold that line right up until the press conference at the 2012 LA Auto show . 2014 Toyota RAV4 leaks out *UPDATE

November 26, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: LA Auto Show , Crossover , Toyota Toyota is ready to unveil the 2014 RAV4 at this year’s LA Auto Show later this week, but it appears a few photos of the new crossover have already hit the web. The crew at CarStyleBlog.com has gotten its hands on a small batch of interior and exterior shots that seem to detail the new Honda CR-V fighter. The site also has a few images of a lightly camouflaged version in what looks to be a production facility, complete with interior photos as well. Judging by the teaser video we’ve already seen, this looks to be the real deal. Buyers can expect to find substantially updated aesthetics inside and out. We’ve reached out to Toyota to confirm whether or not these photos are genuine. We’ll update this post as soon as we hear back. Word has it Toyota will abandon the V6 engine option in favor of a more efficient four-cylinder for 2014. Likewise, engineers have scrapped the old four-speed automatic transmission for a six-speed unit. Otherwise, details are scarce.
