California Science Center Unveils Giant Lever Exhibit Featuring the Toyota Tundra Used During Space Shuttle Endeavour Transport
LOS ANGELES (May 31, 2013) – The California Science Center, in partnership with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., unveiled
Filed under: Truck , Videos , Work , Toyota Toyota has worked up a quick video detailing the brand’s involvement in the transportation of the Space Shuttle Endeavour last year. As you may recollect, the California Science Center ran into a hitch when it came to moving Endeavour from LAX to its new home. While most of the route would be covered by a robotically controlled transporter, one portion of the route directed the shuttle over an interstate. Unfortunately, the bridge across wasn’t designed to stand up to the weight of the shuttle and its motorized sled. The Science Center would have to remove Endeavour from its transporter and place it on a lighter, non-motorized sled. That’s where longtime Science Center sponsor Toyota came in. As it turns out, the automaker had to prove to the California Science Center that a Tundra could actually tow the massive shuttle, so engineers put on a little demonstration with a stock truck pulling the equivalent weight over flat ground for the same distance. Once the Science Center was satisfied that the Tundra could pull it off, the move was green lit and the rest is history . Check out the short documentary below for yourself. LOS ANGELES (Oct. 13, 2012) – A Toyota Tundra half-ton pickup truck without any special modifications successfully towed the 150,000 pound space shuttle Endeavour across a bridge spanning the nation’s busiest freeway on Friday night, Oct. 12. The tow was a result of a 20-year partnership between Toyota and the California Science Center to raise awareness of the space program and continue public education through exhibits and events.
Media Alert – UPDATE: Toyota Tundra to Tow Endeavour Space Shuttle Over 405 Freeway on Manchester Bridge
The Toyota Tundra will be towing the space shuttle Endeavour over the 405 Freeway at the Manchester Bridge.
Filed under: Truck , Etc. , Toyota The battle amongst full-size pickup trucks from Ford , Chevy and Ram is as close to a bloodsport as the auto industry has, but now it might be Toyota that gets the last laugh in the tonnage towing race. In what should prove to be the mother of all publicity stunts, a showroom-stock 2012 Toyota Tundra will tow the space shuttle Endeavour to its final resting place at the California Science Center . How exactly does a bone-stock, half-ton pickup tow almost 300,000 pounds, you ask? A quarter mile at a time using a specially designed rig. Endeavour will be towed 12 miles from Los Angeles International Airport to the museum on October 13, and the Tundra will hitch up to the shuttle for the last quarter mile of the trip. The towing rig was made specifically for this event, allowing the full-size Tundra to pull almost 30 times its regular towing capacity . Toyota says that the truck used to tow Endeavour will be a stock V8 Tundra with no enhancements or modifications. The Endeavour exhibit opens at the California Science Center on October 30, joining other airplanes and spacecraft including the capsule from the Gemini 11 mission. The Tundra that tows the shuttle will remain on display at the museum as well.
