Toyota FT-86 Open Concept would make a mighty fine droptop FR-S [UPDATE]

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertible , Performance , Geneva Motor Show , Videos , Toyota There’s nothing wrong with going topless. And Toyota is proving that its FT-86 (read: Scion FR-S / Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ ) coupe is just as excellent with its roof removed. It may only be a concept, but this FT-86 Open previews a new droptop from the Japanese automaker to round out the Toyobaru sports car family. We’re finally getting the chance to see the open-air FT-86 in person here at the Geneva Motor Show , and we’re already yearning to take it canyon-carving. Interestingly, the FT-86 retains the Toyota coupe’s two-plus-two seating arrangement (we’d prefer a proper roadster setup here), but things still look good for this droptop two-door. We’ll be curious to see how the car looks with its folding soft top in place (operated by fancy-shmancy electronics, by the way). As for production intent, rumors have been flying about a production Scion FR-S convertible, but until we hear it directly from Toyota. Consider our hopes in check but our fingers crossed. UPDATE: Wondering what the FT-86 Open Concept looks like with its hat on? Wonder no more – we’ve updated our gallery with shots of the concept with its roof up .

Toyota launches Emirates drift team with new 86 video

Filed under: Motorsports , Coupe , Performance , Videos , Scion , Toyota , Middle East Toyota drifted an FT-86 all over United Arab Emirates roads when the coupe was launched there last month, and now it’s doing it again. 27-year-old Ahmed Omran Al- Amri is the two-time drift championship winner as part of the Emirates Drift Team in his native UAE, and he has used a turbocharged, 570-horsepower Toyota Soarer (our Lexus SC ) as his ride to those titles. Rewarding his team for its winning ways and Toyota love, the Japanese company has taken over to form the Toyota Emirates Drifting Team and provided it with Toyota 86 hatchbacks (our Scion FR-S ) to campaign. Al-Amri has already won this year’s title, but check out the video below of testing the new cars at Yas Marina Circuit for his thoughts on the new car and, of course, beaucoup tire smoke. Japanese TV show pits MX-5 against BRZ and FR-S at Twin Ring Motegi

Japanese TV show pits MX-5 against BRZ and FR-S at Twin Ring Motegi

Filed under: Convertible , Coupe , Japan , Videos , Mazda , Scion , Toyota A Japanese motoring show, complete with titles in comic fonts, put three racing pilots behind the wheels of the Mazda MX-5 Miata , Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S (Toyota 86, in this case) for three laps of the 2.1-mile East Road Course at Twin Ring Motegi. Of course the segment producers know that putting the 167-horsepower roadster against the 200-hp coupes isn’t exactly fair, so they gave the Mazda a small head start of about three grid positions. Ex-sports car racer Takayuki Kinoshita handles the Mazda, former open-wheel pilot Naoki Hattori drives the BRZ, and former Le Mans-class winner Keiichi Tsuchiya gets fast and loose in the FR-S. The drivers offer copious on-track commentary, but it’s in Japanese. That said, watching the MX-5 try to stay in front and watching Tsuchiya start drifting are universal gearhead languages. You’ll find the action after the jump . Toyota FT-86 leaked again in TRD catalog

Toyota FT-86 leaked again in TRD catalog

Filed under: Spy Photos , Coupe , Performance , Toyota Maybe there was a time when a car was unveiled and that was that. But we can’t quite recall such a time. Especially not when dealing with a vehicle as hotly anticipated as the sportscar developed jointly by Toyota and Subaru . The car alternately known as the FT-86 , the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ has been the source of a seemingly endless run-up that’s included concept cars, spy shots and more leaks than a colander. And now we have one more. Subaru just gave us its first official glimpse of what to expect with the BRZ STI Concept that’s headed for the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, but before that, we brought you a couple of leaks from the Toyota side of things: one showing the stock version , and another dolled up with bolt-ons from the Modellista accessories catalog. Now we can add one more as images have surfaced on FT86Club.com of the FT-86 accessorized with parts from Toyota Racing Development (TRD). We have to say we’re more enthused by the standard model without the extra baubles, but this latest leak serves to further demonstrate the endless possibilities in store for customizing what is bound to become a popular model among enthusiasts. Scion FR-S designed with a rollcage in mind and other key tidbits

Scion FR-S designed with a rollcage in mind and other key tidbits

Filed under: Scion , Toyota , Rumormill The diehards at Club4AG have been patiently waiting for a new generation of sports car from Toyota. It seems one of the sites founding members got a closer look at what’s in store for the production version of the Toyota FT-86 II / Scion FR-S . User Moto-P got the chance to attend a dinner meeting with chief project engineer Tetsuya Tada , and it sounds like many a bean was spilled. It’s apparent from Moto-P’s time spent with Tada that the upcoming vehicle is designed to be a true sports car, for true enthusiasts. The engine has been tuned by Yamaha to produce inspiring sounds. Racers will appreciate the space left on either side of the dash, which is there to accommodate a rollcage without also requiring that you cut up the dashboard. There’s even a chance the car will come sans CD player and navigation unit to keep things light and simple in the cabin, yet an iPod connection would still be offered. Moto-P goes on to express his love for the brand, the main engineer and the upcoming car itself. It’s clear that this person is a huge fan, so we take everything said in the forum with a grain of salt. Still, it’s interesting to hear about what may be in store for the long-awaited FT-86/Toyobaru.
