Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertible , Performance , Geneva Motor Show , Videos , Toyota There’s nothing wrong with going topless. And Toyota is proving that its FT-86 (read: Scion FR-S / Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ ) coupe is just as excellent with its roof removed. It may only be a concept, but this FT-86 Open previews a new droptop from the Japanese automaker to round out the Toyobaru sports car family. We’re finally getting the chance to see the open-air FT-86 in person here at the Geneva Motor Show , and we’re already yearning to take it canyon-carving. Interestingly, the FT-86 retains the Toyota coupe’s two-plus-two seating arrangement (we’d prefer a proper roadster setup here), but things still look good for this droptop two-door. We’ll be curious to see how the car looks with its folding soft top in place (operated by fancy-shmancy electronics, by the way). As for production intent, rumors have been flying about a production Scion FR-S convertible, but until we hear it directly from Toyota. Consider our hopes in check but our fingers crossed. UPDATE: Wondering what the FT-86 Open Concept looks like with its hat on? Wonder no more – we’ve updated our gallery with shots of the concept with its roof up .
Filed under: Motorsports , Coupe , Performance , Videos , Scion , Toyota , Middle East Toyota drifted an FT-86 all over United Arab Emirates roads when the coupe was launched there last month, and now it’s doing it again. 27-year-old Ahmed Omran Al- Amri is the two-time drift championship winner as part of the Emirates Drift Team in his native UAE, and he has used a turbocharged, 570-horsepower Toyota Soarer (our Lexus SC ) as his ride to those titles. Rewarding his team for its winning ways and Toyota love, the Japanese company has taken over to form the Toyota Emirates Drifting Team and provided it with Toyota 86 hatchbacks (our Scion FR-S ) to campaign. Al-Amri has already won this year’s title, but check out the video below of testing the new cars at Yas Marina Circuit for his thoughts on the new car and, of course, beaucoup tire smoke. Filed under: Convertible , Coupe , Japan , Videos , Mazda , Scion , Toyota A Japanese motoring show, complete with titles in comic fonts, put three racing pilots behind the wheels of the Mazda MX-5 Miata , Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S (Toyota 86, in this case) for three laps of the 2.1-mile East Road Course at Twin Ring Motegi. Of course the segment producers know that putting the 167-horsepower roadster against the 200-hp coupes isn’t exactly fair, so they gave the Mazda a small head start of about three grid positions. Ex-sports car racer Takayuki Kinoshita handles the Mazda, former open-wheel pilot Naoki Hattori drives the BRZ, and former Le Mans-class winner Keiichi Tsuchiya gets fast and loose in the FR-S. The drivers offer copious on-track commentary, but it’s in Japanese. That said, watching the MX-5 try to stay in front and watching Tsuchiya start drifting are universal gearhead languages. You’ll find the action after the jump . Filed under: Spy Photos , Coupe , Performance , Toyota Maybe there was a time when a car was unveiled and that was that. But we can’t quite recall such a time. Especially not when dealing with a vehicle as hotly anticipated as the sportscar developed jointly by Toyota and Subaru . The car alternately known as the FT-86 , the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ has been the source of a seemingly endless run-up that’s included concept cars, spy shots and more leaks than a colander. And now we have one more. Subaru just gave us its first official glimpse of what to expect with the BRZ STI Concept that’s headed for the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, but before that, we brought you a couple of leaks from the Toyota side of things: one showing the stock version , and another dolled up with bolt-ons from the Modellista accessories catalog. Now we can add one more as images have surfaced on FT86Club.com of the FT-86 accessorized with parts from Toyota Racing Development (TRD). We have to say we’re more enthused by the standard model without the extra baubles, but this latest leak serves to further demonstrate the endless possibilities in store for customizing what is bound to become a popular model among enthusiasts. One such automaker is Scion , and one such vehicle the world’s waiting to see is the FT-86 FT-86 II FT-S. We’re actually not yet sure what Scion will call this concept coupe, as rumors have swirled that it will wear the FT-S badge and not one reading FT-86 . The automaker has decided on one thing, however, and that’s to tease us a bit before we get to see the car in the flesh. A short clip, which you can view after the jump , tells us that Scion will have the car on hand at its stand in New York. If you want to watch the reveal live, just point your browser to Sciondimension.com on April 20 at 1:40 PM EST, and be sure to check back with us for full show coverage.
