Filed under: Budget , Japan , Videos , Hatchback , Toyota Japan has given the world so much to enthuse over. We’re not sure the Toyota Aygo is necessarily one of them as much as, say, the Scion FR-S or Lexus LFA (especially since it’s actually made in Europe), but for many Nipponophiles, the centuries-old artistic discipline of Manga certainly is. And now the two have come together in this two-and-a-half-minute animated short. In Toyota’s own take on the classic narrative, an Aygo animated by celebrated artist Sonia Leong takes on Godzilla. As in, a giant lizard rampaging through a Japanese city, not the Nissan GT-R , against which the little Toyota would certainly stand even less of a chance by any metric other than affordability, fuel economy or ability to park in tight spots. In any case, watch this Manga-fied video above, and feel free to read through the related press release below. Filed under: Budget , Safety , Videos , Hatchback , Toyota It doesn’t matter the make or model – modern vehicles are technological miracles when it comes to occupant protection. Take this story out of New York City, which involved two people going for a very wild ride in a Toyota Matrix . Carlos and Raquel Broadbelt were on the Cross Bronx Expressway overpass when they hit a patch of ice while dodging a pothole, sending them hurtling into a guardrail and over the side of the overpass. They fell 50 feet onto the road below. Despite the catastrophic accident – and the mangled Toyota – both driver and passenger walked away. The couple spent a night in the hospital just for observation. The Broadbelts’ miraculous survival has even surprised doctors, who told Dave Carlin from CBS New York they’d never seen an accident like it. Take a look below for the full news report from CBS New York . Filed under: Hatchback , Toyota According to a report from AutoGuide , Toyota doesn’t have plans to replace the aging Matrix hatchback in the United States after this year. If true, the timing coincides with the replacement for the Corolla , on which the Matrix is based, with that car slated to get its first complete redesign since 2006 (2008 in the US market). We’d love to tell you how many Matrix models were sold by Toyota in the United States last year, but the automaker chooses to bundle Matrix sales with Corolla sales, so we have no idea. That said, we have to assume sales of the hatchback don’t contribute much overall to the total number of Corolla-based machines. We’re also unsure if Toyota will choose to exit the youth-oriented compact hatchback market entirely , or if the automaker will rely instead on its hybrid Prius line and Scion models like the xB and xD . Filed under: Hybrid , Europe , Paris Motor Show , Hatchback , Toyota Toyota may have given us the full spec-sheet on its revised Auris before the car made its official Parisian debut, but our first live look at the next-generation wagon nevertheless proves compelling. The longer, lower five-door looks the part of a better-handling hatchback – just the role that Toyota hopes the hybrid can play in the European market. The Hybrid seen here is the second-generation gas-electric Auris, and it will be the top-level powertrain option for European buyers. Toyota expects that a full one-third of Auris buyers will select that Hybrid Synergy Drive model – the other two-thirds of buyers are expected to be evenly split between the diesel- and gasoline-powered versions of the car. Have a closer look at the handsome 2013 Toyota Auris in our live gallery and scroll below for the official word from Toyota in both video and press release forms. Filed under: Hybrid , Government/Legal , Technology , Videos , Hatchback , Toyota It’s election time and auto bailouts are not the only thing politicians are talking about. Down in Florida, one group has connected a candidate’s support for automated car testing to, well, nothing. And that makes him evil. The Committee to Protect Florida has taken Rep. Jeff Brandes (R-Fla.) to task for proving automated cars did not operate by “witchcraft” instead of working on other things in the St. Petersburg area. The commercial attempts to instill fear in the program and make it sound like these machines are running amok on Florida’s streets. (Note the sound effects at the end of the video.) The attack ad features a Toyota Prius running a stop sign and nearly hitting an older woman using a walker as the narrator goes on about how silly these newfangled machines might be. Then the commercial flashes the question, “Will Driverless cars REALLY stop for pedestrians?” Maybe. And if they don’t, everyone should blame Jeff Brandes.
Filed under: Hybrid , Videos , Hatchback , Toyota , Humor Let’s make this clear from the get-go: we know this is satire, courtesy of The Onion . Of course, like all good comedy, the idea for the new, fictional Toyota Prius Solution model contains a grain of truth. After all, if you aren’t alive, you really can’t add to the world’s environmental problems any more. Any questions? Obviously a riff on the whole “Pious” side of the Prius-driver stereotype as well as taking blind environmentalism to its logical extreme, the Prius Solution manages to put a bloody twist on the Prius “family” branding that the automaker has been promoting since early 2010. It’s kind of gross, so you’ve been warned. That said, anyone who’s been punctured backbone-to-sternum also can’t work to solve world’s environmental problems, but that’s a discussion for another time. Enough talk. Check out the video below . Filed under: Etc. , Japan , Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Hatchback , Toyota How do you follow up androgyny ? With a Spanking Orchestra, obviously. Proving that the 2013 Toyota Auris has depths we haven’t begun to comprehend, Toyota’s Japanese ad agency has followed up the head-turning spot with Stav Strashko by kitting an Auris out with “spanking machines” and putting it on display at the Daikanyama Art Street festival. The machines are computer-controlled hands that tap (or spank, if you prefer) the car to the programmed beat. As if that weren’t enough, two pairs of free-standing hands, with arms, clap time at either end of the car. If there’s a meaning to it, we’re not aware of it, but it’s fascinating to watch. It isn’t often – actually, never – that we get to say, “Ladies and gentlemen, we present The Spankers.” You’ll find them below , and the action begins in the first video at the 2:40 mark. Filed under: Hybrid , Technology , Hatchback , Mercedes-Benz , Smart , Toyota , Tesla , Electric Looks like another Tesla Motors investor will be looking to cash in on their connection. Autoweek reports Mercedes-Benz will offer their B-Class in the U.S. with Tesla propulsion. The magazine says their source at the German automaker confirms plans for a B-Class electric-only vehicle. While Tesla already provides battery packs for the battery-powered Smart ForTwo , the B-Class EV will reportedly have Tesla batteries, motor and other components. U.S. residents should be able to procure one sometime in 2014. The same Mercedes source says plans for a hybrid B-Class have been postponed for now. Adding a range-extending, gasoline-powered engine to an electric vehicle would put the car into a different class for which rebates and incentives aren’t as favorable in the States. Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler owns a 4.7-percent share of Tesla.
Filed under: Hybrid , Sedan , Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Crossover , Hatchback , Toyota The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has grown its investigation into certain Toyota models to cover a full 1.4 million cars and trucks. Reuters reports the government safety agency has upgraded the investigation to a full-blown engineering analysis, which may eventually lead to a recall. NHTSA has received a number of complaints concerning fires tied to models built between September 2006 and August 2008 that use the same power window master switch design. All told, customers have reported nine injuries and 161 crashes or fires, though no deaths have been tied to the issue. The analysis covers 2007-2009 Camry , Camry Hybrid , RAV4 and Yaris models as well as 2008 Highlander Hybrid crossover. Back in February, NHTSA opened an investigation into 830,000 Camry and RAV4 units , though today’s announcement grows that number to over 1.4 million models.
