Filed under: Hybrid , Sedan , Japan , Plants/Manufacturing , Toyota Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will be in showrooms sooner than planned, the Japan Times reporting that production will commence in mid-December with the sedan following “by the end of this year.” No reason was given for the new timeline; Toyota has been saying all along that we’d see it in 2015. The company is said to be “considering” production volume of “dozens of… vehicles per month” at a “likely” price of eight million yen, which is $78,030 US. That is well in line with the numbers thrown around last year, when the target was somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000 . Then late last year, during our first drive of the FCHV mule , we wrote that “the official quote… [is] that a price of ‘less than 10 million yen is ideal.'” That alleged $78K is a sizable sum to be one of the early adopters on the hydrogen fuel cell wagon train, but with things moving around so much – and with Toyota publicly citing hydrogen fuel cells as the future – there’s plenty of reason to be cautious about that number. Toyota Collaborates with FirstElement, Providing Financial Assistance to Facilitate a Hydrogen Refueling Network in Targeted California Locations
TORRANCE, Calif. (May 1, 2014) – “The issue of hydrogen refueling infrastructure is not so much about how many stations; but rather, location, location, location,” stated Bob Carter, senior vice president, Automotive Operations, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS), just four months ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where he unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell sedan due to launch in 2015.

(June 28, 2013) – Toyota will help advance the national conversation around the future of mobility and advanced technologies such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and autonomous cars with its first-time presence at the Aspen Ideas Festival from June 26 to July 2 in Aspen, Colo. Filed under: Technology , Toyota While the cost of building a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle continues to go down over time, reports over the last few years have steadily maintained that the first Toyota hydrogen-powered vehicles for customers should ring up for around $50,000. Company officials cited this figure way back in 2010 , and have reiterated it in subsequent years. So, while a recent Automotive News report about the cost of Toyota’s 2015 Hydrogen car doesn’t offer up any new figures, it does offer an interesting pricing wrinkle. According to the report, the “cost factor” for the hydrogen vehicles will be in the $50k ballpark, meaning the retail price could be anywhere from there, up to as much as around $100,000. While certainly not inexpensive, being able to produce a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle for fifty large is a pretty massive improvement over the prototype cost of a few years ago, when the sticker was about $1 million a pop. While these very expensive prototypes are based on previous-generation Highlanders (pictured above), we’re told to expect that the final product will be a lot more in line with the Prius , as far as size and shape. Filed under: Technology , BMW , Toyota For over a year now, we’ve been hearing about a potential partnership between Toyota and BMW on everything from sports cars to lithium-ion batteries , but one of the first cooperative projects between these two automakers could bring Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell technology to a BMW vehicle. Reuters is reporting that an announcement is likely to be made as soon as later this week regarding a BMW fuel cell vehicle that could be in production by 2020 with a prototype running around by 2015. The last we heard of Toyota’s fuel cell technology, it was in the FCV-R Concept that we saw at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show , but there is no word how far along in development this system is. If it does come to fruition, such a vehicle for BMW would build on the automaker’s commitment to hydrogen that started with the Hydrogen 7 , which unlike a fuel cell vehicle, simply ran on hydrogen fuel rather than converting it to electricity for use in motors. We’re definitely interested where this Toyota/BMW tie up could be headed.
