Filed under: Motorsports , Sedan , Toyota , Racing Toyota recently introduced the all-new 2015 Camry for the street, so it follows that it should want to promote its new bread-and-butter sedan by putting it out on the racetrack as well. And that’s just what it’s done here with the release of the new Toyota Camry for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The new Camry represents the first reskin of the standard stock car chassis since the Gen-6 model was introduced in 2012. Toyota’s Calty Design studio worked closely with series organizers to determine which parts could be redesigned to more closely resemble the new production model, and what you see here is the result. Since it is based on the same control chassis as all the others, the Camry’s skin is applied over a steel tube frame and powered by an old-school 5.86-liter pushrod V8 mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Although the idea of a Japanese automaker in American stock car racing didn’t initially get the warmest reception from some of the good ol’ boys when it first entered the series back in 2007, it has by now become a staple of the NASCAR circuit. After all, it’s hard for even the most patriotic of racing fans to argue with the US-built Camry’s ranking as one of the most American cars by content on the market. Toyota Racing Development will roll out the new Camry at Daytona in February during Speedweeks, after which it will also reveal a new Camry for the second-tier Xfinity Series (currently known as the Nationwide Series). Only it’s not. It’s Japanese, of course. And back in the Japanese Domestic Market, it offers a whole range of models we’ll never see in North America. Models like the Crown sedan, Noah minivan and this, the new Passo hatchback. Sold in various markets as the Daihatsu Boon, Daihatsu Sirion, Perodua Myvi and (for a time) the Subaru Justy, the Toyota Passo is a compact hatchback that slots in size-wise between the Yaris sold in America and the Aygo offered in Europe (except the Passo is taller than either). Power comes from a 1.0-liter engine with 69 horsepower that can be had in front- or all-wheel drive, or a 1.3 driving 95 horses to the front wheels alone. A continuously variable transmission is on duty regardless of engine choice. Front-drive models get a stop/start system, but even all-wheel-drive versions are eligible for government tax credits. That’s because, though the new Passo only appears to be mildly updated, the engines have been thoroughly reworked to deliver 30-percent better fuel economy than the previous model, coming in 20-percent better than the standards being enacted by the Japanese government for next year.

Even though Busch has won 85 races driving Toyotas in three NASCAR series, it was Toyoda who took the driver’s seat for a spin around Daytona International Speedway. The redesigned Camry stocker is expected to be submitted for approval this summer, and you can watch Akio Toyoda put it through its paces in the video below . And that’s largely still the case, with one notable exception: Toyota . The Japanese automaker faced some difficulty breaking into the Good Ol’ Boys racing series, but though some purists may still malign it, Toyota is in NASCAR to stay. And this is its latest car. “Based”, in design anyway, on the latest Camry , the new stock car from Toyota Racing Development is set to compete in the Sprint Cup next season, alongside the new Ford Fusion (among other competitors from Dodge and Chevy ). The result of “an aggressive redesign”, the new racer was developed with input from the company’s Calty Design studio to look more like the road-going Camry than ever before. Yes, it does bear a resemblance to its road-going cousin, especially in the fascia. That said, it’s still a composite body over a tube frame powered by a V8 engine driving the rear wheels. In other words, this is a Camry in name only. Of course it doesn’t hurt Toyota’s case that the Camry is built in America with more American components than most “domestic” vehicles, and now the stock car looks more stock, too.

The automaker is hitting the virtual airwaves with a trio of commercials highlighting its newest midsize sedan, as well as Toyota’s love for NASCAR. Kyle Busch helps out with some smoky burnouts, high-speed driving and general information about the Camry Hybrid , and yes, that does seem a bit incongruous. The first spot posted after the jump is titled ” Electrified “, and shows the NASCAR Camry turning donuts before being hit with some electricity and turning into a Camry Hybrid. Filed under: Motorsports , Sedan , Toyota , Specialty , Racing While Toyota competes with Ford , Chevy and Dodge on this country’s NASCAR tracks, the pace cars leading them around have remained defiantly American – at least at Daytona, anyway. In the 50 years they’ve been running the Daytona 500 , only once has the pace car been an import: the Porsche 914 that paced the race in 1971. Apart from that one exception, it’s been all Detroit – Pontiacs mostly, but also Buicks , Chevrolets, Dodges, Plymouths and Fords. But just as Toyota has rubbed and bumped its way up the field over the past decade plus of competition, it’s now got one of its own up at the front as the official pace car for next year’s race. That’s right. When the 2012 Daytona 500 kicks off the Sprint Cup season come February, it’ll be the new 2012 Toyota Camry setting the pace. And while some may bemoan the use of an “import” for the task, Toyota would argue that nothing could be more American. After all, the Camry has been built in America (first in Georgetown, Kentucky, and now in Lafayette, Indiana) for 25 years now. And for 13 of the past 14 years, it’s been the top selling car in America. So maybe, just maybe, the Toyota Camry has earned the honor.
