TORRANCE, Calif. (Sept. 6, 2013)– Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced the appointment of Ned Curic to the newly-created role of vice president and chief technology officer. Curic reports to North American chief information officer Zack Hicks.

The fresh new face of the US-spec car takes a number of cues from the Camry and Avalon sedans, and in S trim with the large alloy wheels and blacked-out front fascia, we’d even venture this is the most boldly styled North American Corolla to date (faint praise as that may be). Of course, our friends in other markets will also be getting fully updated versions of the Corolla as well, and here, we’re getting our first glimpse at the European-spec car, complete with a very different front fascia that, at least in this trim, seems to take a more conservative design approach. A quick poll of the Autoblog staff shows that we’re torn as to whether or not we prefer this European look to our North American-specific car, but at least in the sporty-ish S trim, we think the Americans may have got the better end of the deal. The Euro-spec Corolla actually shares a lot of its design with its larger platform-mate, the Auris , a car that we don’t – and likely won’t – get in the States. Inside, the European Corolla looks basically the same as the NA car, and while market-specific engines and specifications haven’t been released yet, it’s expected that the Corolla will share much of its dirty bits with the European Auris, as well. Filed under: Minivan/Van , Toyota , Canada , Specialty , Russia , Diesel No, a Ford Expedition did not drive from Russia to Canada via the North Pole, but that’s exactly what a team of intrepid explorers accomplished recently. Using specially-modified buses with massive tires, the group slowly drove 2,485 miles in 70 days over drifting ice, occasionally using a pickaxe to clear a path and staying on guard for chasms that could open up and plunge the team into the frigid arctic waters. Average speeds were about 6 mph, “at the speed of a (farm) tractor.” While the big tires technically allowed the buses to float if the need arose, the team preferred to stay out of the water to keep the suspension from getting coated in thick, hard ice. Falling in on foot would mean almost certain death. According to Phys.org , the buses were powered by Toyota diesel engines, but were built with prototype parts from a previous driving expedition to the North Pole. Right now, the machines are parked in a garage in Canada’s Resolute Bay while the the team rests up with family back home. They plan to continue their trek to back across the Bering Straight to Russia. If successful, the team may eventually offer a version of their buses for commercial sale. Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing , Toyota A growing number of foreign automakers have been shifting more vehicle production to the US – including recent announcement by Nissan and Honda – but Toyota could be on the verge of taking an unprecedented step by producing all of the cars it sells in the US right here in North America. According to the Detroit Free Press , Bill Fay, VP and GM of Toyota US, hinted at such a possibility, but the wording in the report makes it sound like this is far from a done deal and would not apply to Scion or Lexus models. Currently, the automaker already builds 70 percent of its US-sold cars in North America including some of its more popular models like the Camry , Corolla , Highlander , Tacoma and RAV4 . While most of the Japanese-made Toyotas that are sold in the US are slower-selling models (like Land Cruiser , FJ Cruiser and Yaris ), the Prius lineup is the glaring exception, and last we heard, Toyota still has plans to ship Prius production to the US by 2015 . This is all a part of Toyota’s plan to add 3,500 jobs in North America to go with recent investments totaling $1.6 billion.
