Filed under: Technology , Toyota While the cost of building a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle continues to go down over time, reports over the last few years have steadily maintained that the first Toyota hydrogen-powered vehicles for customers should ring up for around $50,000. Company officials cited this figure way back in 2010 , and have reiterated it in subsequent years. So, while a recent Automotive News report about the cost of Toyota’s 2015 Hydrogen car doesn’t offer up any new figures, it does offer an interesting pricing wrinkle. According to the report, the “cost factor” for the hydrogen vehicles will be in the $50k ballpark, meaning the retail price could be anywhere from there, up to as much as around $100,000. While certainly not inexpensive, being able to produce a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle for fifty large is a pretty massive improvement over the prototype cost of a few years ago, when the sticker was about $1 million a pop. While these very expensive prototypes are based on previous-generation Highlanders (pictured above), we’re told to expect that the final product will be a lot more in line with the Prius , as far as size and shape. Power and Associates surveys original owners of three-year-old vehicles to find out what kinds of problems they have had experienced over the last 12 months, and then it uses this data to create its annual Vehicle Dependability Study . This means that the models in the 2013 study are 2010 model year vehicles, and J.D. Power rates each make as well as the top individual models based on how many problems were experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100). Debunking the idea that carryover models are more dependable than new or updated models, the 2013 study found that the average carryover model experienced 133 PP100, while all-new or redesigned vehicles for the 2010 model year had 116 PP100; vehicles that received minor changes fared the best with just 111 PP100. The overall average for all makes was 126 PP100, which is the lowest figure since the findings were first issued in 1989. For 2013, Lexus and Porsche remained in the top two spots, respectively (and each experienced fewer problems year over year), but there were plenty of shakeups elsewhere in the list. The biggest mover overall was Ram , which moved up 20 spots from one of the worst performers in 2012 to sitting pretty in the top 10. Other big positive movers include Mazda , Infiniti and Ford . Filed under: New York Auto Show , Crossover , Toyota Toyota has been teasing us with glimpses of the redesigned 2013 Venza over the last month, and now we get to see its modest makeover just before the vehicle’s New York Auto Show debut. The new, less fussy grille is the first thing you’ll notice. Fewer horizontal bars above the bumper and a chrome accent goes some way toward below classing up the crossutilitywagon thing. The headlamps are new, and the fog lights have also been blacked out with chrome accent ring. Finishing off the new light fixtures are reworked door mirrors fitted with the obligatory built-in turn signals. In back, the taillights have been slightly updated, but everything else seems to be much the same as the 2012 model. Venzas can now be ordered in Attitude Black, Cypress Pearl and Cosmic Gray Mica. Interior changes also seem to be minimal except for updated steering wheel buttons and the option of adding Toyota’s Entune package that integrates your smart phone with the vehicle’s dashboard display. The interior is also available in black for 2013. Engine choices stay the same, with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6 on offer.

But, unfortunately for automakers, those numbers have risen at a painfully slow pace. The ‘slow and steady’ trend is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, but The Detroit News reports that both Ford and General Motors see continued sales increases in 2012. Ford economist Jenny Lin thinks that sales should progress beyond the 12.5 million to 13.5 million units forecasted for 2011. Lin added that a lack of new car sales over the last few years has led to a quickly aging fleet of vehicles on U.S. roads. In fact, the average vehicle on our roads is 10.6 years old, an all-time high. GM chief economist Mustafa Mohatarem seems to agree, adding that demand is high and sales would be higher if Honda and Toyota could ramp up production. Mohatarem says the two Japanese automakers are still struggling to fill dealer lots in the wake of Japan’s March earthquake and tsunami.

Tokyo Electric Power reports that 575,500 households are without power already, and that number could certainly climb. Japanese automakers are bracing for Typhoon Roke as well. According to reports, Toyota , Honda , Nissan and Mitsubishi have all closed down plants or cancelled shifts at facilities affected by the storm. This is the second typhoon to hit Japan so far this year, and the country averages between two and four of the storms every year. In other words, this may not be the last weather-related outage you hear about from Japanese automakers in 2011. It’s a number that’s nearly unfathomable. If all of those polite four-doors were still roaming the earth, there’d be one for every man, woman and child in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. combined, and you’d still have a almost a million vehicles left over. Even more eye-widening is Toyota’s claim that of the Camry models built and sold over the last 15 years, 90 percent are still happily enduring a daily commute on nearly every corner of the planet. By sheer volume and longevity, the Camry is nothing short of an engineering and manufacturing wonder. Almost by default, the Camry has grown to become the vehicle by which all other mid-sized creations must measure themselves, and over the past two years, Ford , Hyundai , Kia and Volkswagen have unveiled products designed specifically to lure buyers from the Toyota model’s swollen ranks. In response, Toyota City has turned out the seventh-generation Camry – a model that’s been altered with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it delicacy. According to the latest reports, it seems the two automakers are ready to take their relationship to the next level. What initially started as a $60-million deal turned into a $100-million affair earlier this year. You know what’s cooler than a million-dollar deal? A billion-dollar deal, and that’s reportedly what’s now on the table between the two automakers. Per Tesla CEO Elon Musk , his company is in talks with Toyota to ink a deal that would see $1 billion trading hands. Any issues about capital could quickly disappear, and Tesla could quickly become a major player in the automotive industry thanks to this serious cash infusion.
