Filed under: Wagon , Plants/Manufacturing , Subaru , Toyota Subaru has produced its four-millionth vehicle at its Lafayette, Indiana factory. The Deep Indigo Blue 2014 Outback is pictured above, alongside the very first Subaru to leave the Lafayette facility, a first-generation Legacy. Formally known as Subaru of Indiana Automotive, SIA opened its doors in 1989 and currently produces the Outback, Forester and Tribeca for Subaru, in addition to the Toyota Camry . The plant, which was originally a joint venture between Subaru and Isuzu , has produced nine different models for four different manufacturers over the years, and is getting ready to add a tenth as Impreza production will be coming to SIA. Subaru announced plans to move Impreza production to Indiana when it made a $400-million investment in the facility earlier this year. As production continues, the Lafayette Journal-Courier reports that SIA will produce another million units by the end of 2017. In other words, practically everyone has had some experience with Toyota’s ever-popular mid-sizer. Toyota wants to explore how those figures have impacted the world around us with a new advertising campaign. “The Camry Effect” aims to figure out exactly how many visitors to the company’s web site have interacted with the sedan over the years. Toyota is collecting stories about Camry owners and their adventures behind the wheel of the four-door. If you drove your parent’s Camry to college, took one across country or otherwise enjoyed some time behind the wheel during a pivotal moment in your life, Toyota wants to hear from you. The industry mag tested 51 vehicles to come up with this year’s winners, which span three luxury vehicles, three economy cars, a sport sedan, a minivan, a family sedan and an SUV. Ward’s AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter says the publication has never tested so many vehicles, adding, “Every auto maker wants the freshest, highest-quality interior possible for all the vehicles they sell.” Showing just how much the world of interiors has changed over the years, Chrysler was the only automaker to take home two awards, thanks to the Dodge Charger and Jeep Grand Cherokee , while Kia and Hyundai could technically say the same since the Elantra and Optima each took home honors. At the same time, both Toyota and Lexus were shut out, as was Honda’s Acura luxury brand and Mercedes-Benz . Among the first-time winners for 2011 are the Ford Focus Titanium and Chevy Cruze .
