Such is the case with the C-HR concept making its debut at the Paris Motor Show this week. It’s a concept showing forward-thinking design that hints at “a type of crossover vehicle Toyota would like to bring to market,” according to the automaker’s release, and it rides on an all-new platform and uses a hybrid powertrain. About that powertrain: Toyota isn’t revealing anything, just saying that it will – brace yourselves – “deliver significantly improved fuel efficiency” (over what, exactly?) The car also uses a brand-new architecture, though it hasn’t really revealed any major details about that aspect, either. It’s a high-riding, muscular thing, with a rakish hatchback shape. Should it reach production, Toyota says it would take the shape of a C-segment crossover. It’d be cool to see something like this hit the road someday, but for now, we won’t hold our breath. Changes for the 2013 Verso include visual updates to the front and rear – new headlights, LED running lights, taillights etc. – as well as other exterior tweaks. The inside has been refined as well, with more soft-touch materials, satin chrome trim and cool new lighting; just what the small, modern European family needs to motor in happiness. Getting it all right is important, too, if Toyota hopes to meet its own lofty sales goals for the MPV – the company stated that it wants to sell 50,000 Versos in 2013, which would give the vehicle five percent of the European market for its segment. The longer, lower five-door looks the part of a better-handling hatchback – just the role that Toyota hopes the hybrid can play in the European market. The Hybrid seen here is the second-generation gas-electric Auris, and it will be the top-level powertrain option for European buyers. Toyota expects that a full one-third of Auris buyers will select that Hybrid Synergy Drive model – the other two-thirds of buyers are expected to be evenly split between the diesel- and gasoline-powered versions of the car. Filed under: Minivan/Van , Paris Motor Show , Hatchback , Toyota The seven-seat Toyota Verso mini-MPV was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show , two years on its successor will be introduced in Paris in about a week. The mid-cycle changes include more than 300 new parts with threefold aims: bringing the exterior design in line with the just-refreshed Auris , upgrading the fit and finish and improving the driving dynamics. That means a redesigned nose with elements that emphasize the length and width of the car, like narrower headlights with daytime LEDs, tweaked taillamps above a rear bumper with an integrated diffuser, and in a reversal of trend, smaller door mirrors with integrated turn signals. Inside, a black satin finish and soft-touch surfaces ease up the eye and finger appeal, highlights are noted in satin chrome trim, lighting and graphics have been harmonized and been given better dimmer switch controls. There are also new seat fabrics and colors, and Nappa leather makes an appearance in some Verso models. Engines get a little extra engineering, too. The 2.0-liter, 175-horsepower D-4D engine is quieter and provides more torque at low rpm, the 2.2-liter D-CAT diesel puts out 148 hp, and both diesels get higher tow ratings. On the gasoline side, 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter Valvematics remain available. All of them will make better use of their power through the Verso’s increased rigidity, an effect of more welding points used in production, and noise and vibration have been decreased through the use of more sound-deadening in the A-pillars and bulkhead.
