Filed under: SUV , Europe , Videos , Toyota , Diesel , Luxury , Off-Road We’d seen leaked images of the the refreshed 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, now Toyota has deemed it officially ready for the European masses it is aimed at. We can only hope the masses are ready for that grille, probably the most intense of the many changes made to the volcano-eating truck. The new face and its “powerfully projecting vertical bars” were designed to “accentuate the new Toyota’s rugged appearance,” as if the legendarily capable SUV wasn’t rugged enough. Other changes include redesigned headlight clusters, stronger character lines along the sides, new taillights and license plate “garnish” in back, and a slew of new wheel choices. Both the three- and five-door are 20 millimeters longer, all of that in the front overhang, but the approach angle apparently hasn’t changed. The new organization of trims runs from Entry to Legend, Prestige and Executive. The interior has been reorganized with better seats in the second and third rows, a new upper center console, a redesigned panel for controlling on- and off-road driving functions, reworked Optitron meters with a 4.2-inch LCD screen, and new switchgear, fabrics and color schemes. Infotainment has been upgraded with Toyota Touch 2 and Toyota Touch 2 with Go. They mirror your smartphone if said phone happens to be either a Samsung Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2. On-road driving dynamics have been improve with suspension changes, and a Rear Cross Traffic Alert added to the suite of safety features for maneuvering the beast.

Filed under: Car Buying , Hybrid , Toyota A Toyota executive has said that the automaker’s hybrid Prius model may not reach its 2013 goal of selling 250,000 units in the US marketplace. Bill Fay, group vice president for Toyota’s US sales, told Reuters , “The 240,000 to 250,000 range is kind of where we’re settling our sights for the Prius family.” The first-generation Prius, a five-passenger model, was introduced to the States in 2001 (its arrival made it the second mass-produced hybrid, after the two-seat Honda Insight ). The second-generation model arrived in 2004, followed by the current third-generation design that arrived for the 2010 model year. The automaker has subsequently added the Prius V , a hatchback wagon (shown above) and the Prius C , a subcompact hatchback. As of March, 2013, cumulative worldwide sales of the Prius had reached 3.67 million units. Last year, Toyota sold 236,659 Prius models in the US. However, sales of the model have fallen 5.1 percent in the first six months of 2013. In response, the automaker has boosted its marketing for the model, and the promotions are expected to continue through at least July. Filed under: Europe , Ford , Hyundai , Mercedes-Benz , Subaru , Toyota , Volkswagen , Volvo , Renault , Peugeot Electric cars may have won the European Car of the Year award two years in a row now ( Opel Ampera in 2012, and Nissan Leaf in 2011), we can say without reservation that the 2013 ECotY will be a petrol-burning, internal combustionizer. That’s because not a single electric vehicle made it to the contest’s final round. But eight other cars did. At the top of the alphabetical list is Ford’s Fiesta -based, B-Max MPV. Five doors, good ride and fuel-efficient, award-winning engine choices are some of the reasons it makes the list. Next is the Hyundai i30 , known as the Elantra GT Stateside , with either five or three doors, a roomy cabin and a 1.6-liter CRDi engine. The nominating committee commends the handsome hatch for improved exterior aesthetics and a multilink suspension that “shows in ride and handling.” Mercedes gets the next spot with its hot hatch: the turbocharged A-Class , followed by another hatch, the Peugeot 208 . The next finalist is from another marque we haven’t seen in the States for quite some time – the fourth-generation Renault Clio , followed by the Subaru / Toyota dynamic duo of BRZ and the GT86 . The last two contenders are the all-new Volkswagen Golf and the svelte Volvo V40 . The European Car of the Year will be announced in early March after the jury has tallied its votes.

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertible , Hybrid , Performance , Tokyo Motor Show , Toyota , Specialty With everyone predictably swarming over the Toyobaru Twins here at the Tokyo Motor Show , one bit of performance geekery has been largely overlooked. Toyota brought out the second iteration of its MR-S/MR2-based GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept , with an all-new look, more carbon fiber and a reworked hybrid powertrain. The standard 2ZZ four-cylinder (or lesser 1ZZ in the States) has been swapped out for a 3.5-liter V6 mounted amidships and outputting 247 horsepower. While that’s not much juice from a big V6, the addition of an electric motor powering the front wheels brings overall output up to just under 300 hp, allowing the 3,300-pound roadster to run to 60 mph in the mid-five-second range. If you’re wondering about the name, it’s an acronym for “Gazoo Racing tuned by Meister of the N

This once-overlooked segment of vehicles has been booming lately, what with recent additions like the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 , not to mention soon-to-be-released models like the Chevrolet Sonic , Nissan Versa , Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio . Toyota is a player in this segment, but the Yaris , isn’t exactly aging too well, but a brand new version is just around the corner. That is, if these photos from a Hungarian Toyota dealership’s Facebook page are anything to go on. This stylish new Yaris looks to be the end result of what renderings and spy shots have foretold, though it’s still unclear whether or not this is indeed the car that will be sold here in the United States – this could simply be the Euro-market Yaris. Either way, if this new hatchback is destined for consumption here in the States, we’ll likely hear about it within the coming months.
