TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 16, 2012 – The Toyota Corolla, already one of the best-equipped cars in the compact class, offers new comfort amenities with a choice of Premium Packages for both the LE and S grades for 2013. All Corolla models feature a revised chrome-accented grille for 2013, and the LE and S grades include a standard Display Audio system with 6.1-inch touch screen.
Filed under: Sedan , Toyota As automakers are preparing to release sales figures for October, Toyota is looking a little further ahead by claiming that the Camry is the best-selling car in the US for the 11th straight year a full two months early. Based on sales figures through September, Toyota thinks that its 67,000-unit lead over the closest competitor is big enough to make a fourth-quarter comeback statistically impossible. Camry sales are up about 37 percent through September with 314,788 units sold compared to 247,847 units for the next-closest car, the Honda Accord . The Accord would have to double the Camry’s sales for the rest of the year in order to vie for the “best-selling car” title, and so far in 2012 Accord hasn’t even been able to match the Camry’s numbers. That being said, Automotive News does say that the stellar Camry’s 2012 sales also include higher-than-normal fleet sales accounting for 15 percent of the total – or around 60,000 units-compared to 10 percent that the article states is where Camry fleet sales usually are. The Nissan Altima (234,040), Honda Civic (234,029) and Toyota Corolla (222,703) round out the top five cars of 2012 so far. Next year will likely prove to be a little more challenging for the Toyota with redesigned midsize competitors such as the Ford Fusion , Altima, Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Mazda6 all looking to put some added heat on the Camry – not to mention a substantially updated Civic will be hitting the scene as well. Filed under: Ford , Toyota Last week, Ford boasted that the Ford Focus was the best-selling car in the world through the first half of 2012, but Toyota fired right back claiming its compact sits in the top spot. Which automaker is correct? Well, both. Kind of. Ford says that the Ford Focus has sold 489,616 units through June compared to 462,817 for the Toyota Corolla , and it even hired an independent firm, IHS Automotive , to calculate the sales figures. And this is where things get confusing. See, Ford sells the Focus globally under one name, but the Toyota Corolla is also sold with different body styles that carry different names… and IHS Automotive’s sales figure for Toyota does not include these models. As a counterpoint to the Focus hatchback, the Corolla is also available in a five-door form carrying the Toyota Matrix and Toyota Auris names, while the Corolla Fielder is Toyota’s station wagon alternative to the Ford Focus Estate. The Scion xB is sold in Australia as the Corolla Rumion.

Automotive News is reporting that all those increased Prius sales in the U.S. and Japan (see here and here and here and here etc.) have turned the Prius into the world’s third-best-selling car model for the first three months of 2012. During the first quarter, the Prius sold 247,230 copies around the world. The only cars that sold more during that time were the Toyota Corolla (300,800) and the Ford Focus (277,000). There’s an asterisk on the Prius’ figures: much of that new success is due to the fact that there are a brace of new Prius models, namely the C , V and Plug-in – that have expanded the line, with the C being the “car of the moment in Japan,” according to Automotive News . Sales in the U.S. were up 42 percent in the first quarter. The new models and the increased sales make up what AN calls a “Prius surge,” one that could be capacity constrained in the States.
The Toyota Corolla, which received refreshed styling and numerous enhancements for 2011, enters the 2012 model year with upgrades to the feature content for the base L model and a new standard audio system for the LE and S grade models.

Since late July, typhoons in Southeast Asia have caused billions of dollars of damage, and now production at three Toyota plants and one Honda facility has been halted, according to the Associated Press . While Toyota’s plants in eastern Thailand haven’t been directly affected by the weather, the inability of suppliers to deliver parts has caused the shutdowns there. Honda’s plant in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, isn’t so lucky. Offline since October 4, and flooded since October 8, Honda officials can’t even assess the damage because the plant remains inaccessible. The four factories produced over 800,000 vehicles last year. This included 630,000 Toyotas and 170,000 Hondas, representing roughly eight and five percent of each automaker’s respective global volume. Among the vehicles produced in Thailand are the Toyota Corolla and Camry and the Honda Civic and Accord , but none of the Thai plants produce vehicles for the North American market.
