Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Toyota Toyota will launch the 2014 Corolla later this year, and thanks to the ever-leaky internet, a couple of key details about the new sedan have been revealed. Car and Driver was able to uncover these bits of information thanks to someone at a Toyota dealer in Kansas who has seen the car, as well as its order guide, though the dealer’s site has since removed its original posting . We got our first glimpse at the next-generation Corolla’s design at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show , where Toyota unveiled the Furia concept , pictured above. Yes, it looks all sporty and aggressive, but fear not, appliance shoppers, C/D says that the production car should have a couple of Furia bits mixed in with a huge helping of Camry -inspired styling. The 2014 Corolla will reportedly continue to use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, though the mill has been massaged a bit, adding Toyota’s Valvematic continuously variable valve timing. A four-speed automatic (yep!) will be offered in the base model, though the manual transmission now has six gears, and higher trim levels can be had with a CVT. Both engine output and fuel economy numbers should improve slightly over the 2013 model. Currently, the Corolla produces 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque, and achieves 27/34 miles per gallon (city/highway) with the five-speed manual ‘box. Trim levels will now be called base, LE, S and Eco, and a couple of improvements have been made to the materials and equipment offered inside the cabin. Softex leather will be available for 2014, as will a push-button start and a navigation system.
Filed under: Hatchback , Toyota According to a report from AutoGuide , Toyota doesn’t have plans to replace the aging Matrix hatchback in the United States after this year. If true, the timing coincides with the replacement for the Corolla , on which the Matrix is based, with that car slated to get its first complete redesign since 2006 (2008 in the US market). We’d love to tell you how many Matrix models were sold by Toyota in the United States last year, but the automaker chooses to bundle Matrix sales with Corolla sales, so we have no idea. That said, we have to assume sales of the hatchback don’t contribute much overall to the total number of Corolla-based machines. We’re also unsure if Toyota will choose to exit the youth-oriented compact hatchback market entirely , or if the automaker will rely instead on its hybrid Prius line and Scion models like the xB and xD . Filed under: Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Honda , Mazda , Nissan , Toyota Most vehicle recalls that take place these days are a result of some problem that happens during the manufacturing process by the automaker, but as we see here, parts suppliers can also factor in to problematic safety issues. Automotive News is reporting that a total of 3.4 million vehicles produced by Japanese automakers between 2000 and 2004 are being recalled globally due to faulty airbags produced by an outside supplier, Takata Corp. According to the report, vehicles from Toyota , Honda , Nissan and Mazda are being recalled because of passenger front airbags that do not inflate properly. Globally, Toyota is said to be recalling around 1.73 million cars including 510,000 in the US composed of Toyota Corolla , Matrix , Sequoia and Tundra as well as the Lexus SC430 for the 2001 through 2003 model years; this is the second time this year the 2003 Corolla and Matrix have been recalled for an airbag problem. Honda is recalling 1.14 million models, Nissan another 480,000 and Mazda 45,463. The article says that Takata supplied faulty airbags to non-Japanese automakers, but it did not specify which ones. Honda and Toyota have released information on their own websites about the recall, while Nissan and Mazda have not yet commented. Read official press releases from Honda and Toyota , below, and look for updates as we have word from the others. Filed under: Car Buying , Ford , Toyota Toyota isn’t convinced the Ford Focus was the best-selling nameplate globally last year. Bloomberg reports that for the second time in seven months, both Toyota and Ford are laying claim to the title. Ford cites R.L. Polk & Co. data that says the automaker moved some 1.02 million Focus models in 2012 compared to just 872,774 Toyota Corolla units. But Toyota says the actual figure is closer to 1.16 million Corolla models. Last year, Ford said it took the sales crown through the fist half of 2012 based on information from IHS Automotive, but Toyota pointed out those numbers left out models like the Corolla-based Matrix and Auris, as well as the Corolla Fielder and Scion xB-based Corolla Rumion. Whether or not Toyota’s belief that all these cars should be counted in the Corolla bucket is accurate or not is seemingly up for debate… as is the question of why it matters so much to both parties. This time around, Ford is holding the line that the Focus is the “best-selling nameplate,” with Erich Merkle, a US sales analyst with Ford saying the company’s figure is, “a pure number that is verified by a third party.” Toyota, meanwhile, has requested clarification from Polk.
Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Toyota We’ve sort of been wondering when Toyota would finally debut the next-generation Corolla sedan, especially since the current car is getting very, very long in the tooth. We got a glimpse of the new compact’s design at this year’s Detroit Auto Show in the form of the Furia concept seen above, but we figured we’d see the production car by now. According to Edmunds , Toyota will be unveiling the new Corolla sometime soon, and it won’t wait until the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Officials from the Japanese automaker did not state a specific location or date for the new car’s unveiling, but said that the 2014 Corolla is expected to be on sale before the LA expo later this year and that it will be revealed “somewhere in the US.” Toyota did not divulge any details about the new Corolla, and we’re willing to bet that the aggressive lines of the Furia concept will be dulled down quite a bit for the production model. Still, news that the new car is coming sooner rather than later is indeed a good thing. 2014 Toyota Corolla to bow before LA originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 12:57:00 EST. Filed under: Sedan , Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Hatchback , Lexus , Toyota The recall bug strikes Toyota again. The automaker has issued a voluntary recall of three models that, in total, represent more than one million units. Around 752,000 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla and Matrix models are being recalled for airbag concerns, while a windshield wiper issue is causing the recall for close to 270,000 Lexus IS sedans from the 2006-2012 model years. Completely unrelated to the small airbag-related recall issued earlier in the week, the Corolla and Matrix recall is caused by a faulty airbag control module that could potentially short circuit, which could lead to the front airbags or seat belt pretensioners deploying. The Lexus recall is due to a wiper arm nut that wasn’t tightened properly, which can cause the wipers to not work when trying to clear heavy buildup such as snow. Scroll down for a press release that includes more information, as well as details about how owners can contact the manufacturer directly.
