Toyota releases new FT-86 teaser footage ahead of Tokyo reveal

Filed under: Coupe , Performance , Etc. , Japan , Videos , Toyota Toyota has released a new teaser for the company’s upcoming FT-86 that gives us all a glimpse into the vehicle’s design process. The quick spot depicts designers as they slave over both exterior and interior details by choosing wheel and material options for the two-door sports coupe. We’re guessing the same level of attention to detail went into crafting its North-American-bound twin, the Scion FR-S . The video also gives us a quick glance under the hood, where we see a very familiar-looking naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer engine. A fairly stout strut-tower brace is also clearly visible in the ad, though it looks as if Toyota has kept the vehicle’s battery under the hood instead of kicking it to the rear of the vehicle for slightly better weight balance. It’s also worth noting just how low the Subaru flat-four sits in the engine bay of the FT-86. The top of the engine sits well below the strut towers, making for what looks to be a decidedly low center of gravity. While you’re waiting for this car to debut at next week’s Tokyo Motor Show , hit the jump to check out the video for yourself. Toyota FT-86 leaked again in TRD catalog

Toyota FT-86 leaked again in TRD catalog

Filed under: Spy Photos , Coupe , Performance , Toyota Maybe there was a time when a car was unveiled and that was that. But we can’t quite recall such a time. Especially not when dealing with a vehicle as hotly anticipated as the sportscar developed jointly by Toyota and Subaru . The car alternately known as the FT-86 , the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ has been the source of a seemingly endless run-up that’s included concept cars, spy shots and more leaks than a colander. And now we have one more. Subaru just gave us its first official glimpse of what to expect with the BRZ STI Concept that’s headed for the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, but before that, we brought you a couple of leaks from the Toyota side of things: one showing the stock version , and another dolled up with bolt-ons from the Modellista accessories catalog. Now we can add one more as images have surfaced on FT86Club.com of the FT-86 accessorized with parts from Toyota Racing Development (TRD). We have to say we’re more enthused by the standard model without the extra baubles, but this latest leak serves to further demonstrate the endless possibilities in store for customizing what is bound to become a popular model among enthusiasts. Standard Toyota FT-86 / Scion FR-S revealed?

Standard Toyota FT-86 / Scion FR-S revealed?

October 30, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Filed under: Spy Photos , Coupe , Performance , Toyota Is this the standard production version of the Toyota FT-86 / Scion FR-S? Sure looks like it. Another set of brochure shots acquired by the FT-86 forum shows a plainer version of the new rear-drive sports car in red, in contrast to the white Modellista brochure shots from a few days ago. The interior images are the same as before, but the exteriors diverge in a few areas: the production version doesn’t appear to have LED accents by the headlights, the skirting is softer around the car, a conventional whip antenna replaces the shark fin on the roof, and there’s optional vent ornamentation for the front fenders. Opinion seems to be divided on whether Toyota has gone too far with certain elements of the car or, after years of gestation, if didn’t go far enough. We don’t have much longer to wait until the real thing takes a deep bow at the Tokyo Motor Show , but is this what you’ve been waiting for? Scion FR-S designed with a rollcage in mind and other key tidbits

Scion FR-S designed with a rollcage in mind and other key tidbits

Filed under: Scion , Toyota , Rumormill The diehards at Club4AG have been patiently waiting for a new generation of sports car from Toyota. It seems one of the sites founding members got a closer look at what’s in store for the production version of the Toyota FT-86 II / Scion FR-S . User Moto-P got the chance to attend a dinner meeting with chief project engineer Tetsuya Tada , and it sounds like many a bean was spilled. It’s apparent from Moto-P’s time spent with Tada that the upcoming vehicle is designed to be a true sports car, for true enthusiasts. The engine has been tuned by Yamaha to produce inspiring sounds. Racers will appreciate the space left on either side of the dash, which is there to accommodate a rollcage without also requiring that you cut up the dashboard. There’s even a chance the car will come sans CD player and navigation unit to keep things light and simple in the cabin, yet an iPod connection would still be offered. Moto-P goes on to express his love for the brand, the main engineer and the upcoming car itself. It’s clear that this person is a huge fan, so we take everything said in the forum with a grain of salt. Still, it’s interesting to hear about what may be in store for the long-awaited FT-86/Toyobaru.

This time, however, we’ve got video instead of still photography courtesy of our friends at FT86club.com . It’s always great to see a car in motion, and besides, now we have an idea of what the Scion sports car’s exhaust note might sound like. We’ve been having some fun at Autoblog HQ debating exactly what’s going on under all of that swirly camouflage. Some think we may, in fact, be looking at the Subaru version of the Toyota/Subie joint venture – that wing and those wheels say STI to us. However, others point out that the wing could easily be a shout-out to the Supras of yore. Regardless, we all like what we see and can’t wait until someone pulls the wraps off this thing. Click past the jump to see the prototype in motion. Filed under: Coupe , Budget , Performance , Tokyo Motor Show , Scion , Subaru , Toyota , Rumormill Scion FR-S Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery The wait is over… almost. According to a report from Inside Line that jives with what we’ve been hearing ourselves, Toyota (or Scion , or both) and Subaru are set to use the Tokyo Motor Show to jointly unveil the hotly anticipated rear-wheel-drive sport coupes that they have been working on together since what seems like the beginning of time. Yes, that means we need to sit back and keep waiting until December, but at least it’s some sort of real real date to mark on the calendar, right? Until then, you’ll just have to be content with what is sure to be an endless series of spy shots and leaked information on the affordable sportscar duo. Inside Line also offers something of a timetable for production, saying that the Scion FR-S will hit American shores sometime in 2012 (rather nebulous, no?) while the unnamed Subaru version will begin production in the spring of the same year.
