Filed under: Car Buying , Hatchback , Toyota Between its slow sales and the upcoming redesign of the closely related Corolla sedan, things haven’t been looking good for the Toyota Matrix ( for some time now ). After 10 years on the market, Toyota has officially announced that it will drop the Matrix from its US lineup following the 2013 model year. The announcement was made as a part of a press release breaking down what’s new for Toyota in 2014, but for now, it doesn’t look like any Toyota-branded product will fill the Matrix’s spot. The Matrix and its sister car, the defunct Pontiac Vibe , were the final vehicles developed under the joint venture between Toyota and General Motors , an arrangement launched back to 1984. Filed under: Hatchback , Toyota According to a report from AutoGuide , Toyota doesn’t have plans to replace the aging Matrix hatchback in the United States after this year. If true, the timing coincides with the replacement for the Corolla , on which the Matrix is based, with that car slated to get its first complete redesign since 2006 (2008 in the US market). We’d love to tell you how many Matrix models were sold by Toyota in the United States last year, but the automaker chooses to bundle Matrix sales with Corolla sales, so we have no idea. That said, we have to assume sales of the hatchback don’t contribute much overall to the total number of Corolla-based machines. We’re also unsure if Toyota will choose to exit the youth-oriented compact hatchback market entirely , or if the automaker will rely instead on its hybrid Prius line and Scion models like the xB and xD . Filed under: Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Honda , Mazda , Nissan , Toyota Most vehicle recalls that take place these days are a result of some problem that happens during the manufacturing process by the automaker, but as we see here, parts suppliers can also factor in to problematic safety issues. Automotive News is reporting that a total of 3.4 million vehicles produced by Japanese automakers between 2000 and 2004 are being recalled globally due to faulty airbags produced by an outside supplier, Takata Corp. According to the report, vehicles from Toyota , Honda , Nissan and Mazda are being recalled because of passenger front airbags that do not inflate properly. Globally, Toyota is said to be recalling around 1.73 million cars including 510,000 in the US composed of Toyota Corolla , Matrix , Sequoia and Tundra as well as the Lexus SC430 for the 2001 through 2003 model years; this is the second time this year the 2003 Corolla and Matrix have been recalled for an airbag problem. Honda is recalling 1.14 million models, Nissan another 480,000 and Mazda 45,463. The article says that Takata supplied faulty airbags to non-Japanese automakers, but it did not specify which ones. Honda and Toyota have released information on their own websites about the recall, while Nissan and Mazda have not yet commented. Would you believe neither made Inside Line’s list of 2011 models with the highest percentage of female ownership? No. 1, with 57.9-percent female ownership was the Volvo S40 . Considering the female dollar is sought-after, it’s probably too bad that Volvo decided to axe the model for 2012. That means No. 2, the Nissan Rogue with 56.9 percent, could take the top spot for 2012. Or maybe the VW Eos at No.

How about if that stalker had personal information such as your home address, email and phone number? Nope, doesn’t sound like much fun to us, either. T hat’s exactly what happened to Amber Duick , a woman from California who claims she was duped into signing up for a five-day stalking, courtesy of the marketing team at Saatchi & Saatchi, on behalf of Toyota . One of Amber’s so-called friends decided it would be funny if she had an online stalker, so he forwarded her an email for a “personality test” that was actually an application to be punked. It was all part of a campaign in 2009 for the Toyota Matrix called “Your Other You.” Duick’s made-up “stalker” was named Sebastian Bowler, a 25-year-old soccer fanatic from England with a drinking problem and a pit bull named Trigger. According to a series of emails sent to Duick, Bowler was on his way to her home and planned to sleep on her couch for a few nights after running into problems with the law. Eventually, Duick was informed via an emailed video link that she was being pranked. Haha, very funny. Duick sued.

According to Ward’s Auto , the hatchback’s sales have fallen off of a cliff, with just 14,592 deliveries last year. That’s down from a height of 66,836 units in 2002. But that’s just here in the typically hatch-averse United States. In Canada, the Matrix is still kicking in teeth, though the Corolla still outsells its long-roof twin by more than twice the volume. While there’s been some speculation that the upcoming compact Prius variant will supplant the Matrix in the Toyota family tree, Bob Carter, Toyota’s Group Vice President and General Manager, says that the two vehicles are expected to appeal to vastly different audiences. Still, we have to think that Toyota would be wise to invest a little coin in the aging Matrix when the Corolla gets a revamp in a few years. American buyers seem to be slowly warming to the idea of hatches and wagons, and competitors from Hyundai to Ford are all offering five-door variants. As Ward’s Auto points out, 43 percent of 2012 Focus sales have been hatchbacks to date.
