Generally speaking, they’re fuel efficient, comfortable and affordable. What the general public may not realize, however, is that Toyota enjoys a very strong history of going off road, too. The legendary Land Cruiser arguably established the trend, helping explore remote parts of the globe, while various guerilla warfare outfits and world military branches have unwittingly joined up with the boys from Top Gear to help cement the Hilux pickup’s reputation for invincible performance. Now, though, Toyota is launching a new line of trucks and SUVs in the US that are even more explicitly targeted at hitting the trails. Meet the TRD Pro Series. Featuring the 4Runner , Tacoma and Tundra , each Pro Series vehicle features TRD-tuned springs with Bilstein shocks, a TRD front skid plate, a TRD shifter, black wheels, branded floor mats and a “TOYOTA” grille badge, the latter of which harkens back to classic models. TRD Pro Series vehicles will be offered in the new Inferno paint color shown above, as well as Black and Super White. The Tundra benefits from softer TRD springs that also provide a two-inch lift and a better ride in the rough, while the truck itself rides on 18-inch wheels with Michelin ORP tires. Each truck gains an extra two inches of wheel travel in front and 1.25 inches in back, while a TRD dual exhaust should generate a nicer sound than the trucks’s standard V8 engine.
Filed under: Truck , Plants/Manufacturing , Toyota , Off-Road Toyota may be expanding its pickup truck production at its San Antonio, TX factory following calls from dealers for more Tacoma and Tundra models, according to a new report from Automotive News . The San Antonio plant is currently able to produce 250,000 trucks on two shifts with overtime, while a secondary facility in Tijuana, Mexico can build an extra 50,000 Tacomas. Despite this capacity, and the fact that Tundra is a slow seller relative to the full-size trucks from Ford , Ram and Chevrolet / GMC (not to mention the Tacoma being part of a segment with diminishing sales), Toyota franchisees apparently can’t get enough of the trucks. “Dealers are telling us they could sell more Tacomas and Tundras,” said Bill Fay , the general manager of the Toyota Division. “We are evaluating our footprint and capacity.” According to AN, Toyota has moved over 248,000 trucks through November. Whether the Japanese brand will expand, though, remains an open question. “We have 2008 and 2009 fresh in our minds, when the pickup market dropped from 2.5 million to 1.1 million,” Fay told AN. “But we also need to be flexible for three years down the road from now.” With the launch of the restyled Tundra resulting in 101,744 units sold so far in 2013 and Fay predicting 137,000 Tundras finding a home in 2014, Toyota faces a difficult decision – short dealers who are aching for more trucks or make a big investment and risk a low return. To see how popular pickup trucks still are, you don’t have to look any further than how much effort automakers put into the continual one-upmanship of their trucks. Backing this fact up, USA Today is reporting that the segment could top two million sales this year – a total not matched since 2007, though still far from the pre-recession, three-million-unit levels. Through August, the Ford F-Series continues to be the segment leader with almost 500,000 units sold, but the Chevy Silverado (328,269), Ram 1500 (234,642), GMC Sierra (122,232) and Toyota Tacoma (110,293) are all seeing at least 20-percent sales increases, helping to account for around 1.44 million truck sales so far this year – not including possible outliers like the Suzuki Equator and Chevy Avalanche . This year alone, General Motors has completely redesigned its fullsize trucks, Ram and Toyota have significantly updated their offerings, the next-gen Ford F-150 will be out next year and Nissan is promising an all-new Titan around the same time with an eventual Cummins diesel under the hood . It would seem, then, that truck sales are poised to continue their upward trend. Filed under: Car Buying , Truck , Chevrolet , Nissan , Toyota According to a new study by Black Book , the fact that there are fewer mid-sized pickup truck options on the market is driving up the retail cost of used models. During the month of June, used vehicles from model years 2007-2011 depreciated an average of 1.3 percent across the board, but midsize pickups of the same year saw their value decrease by just 0.7 percent on average. Look across the past year, and the market as a whole saw those cars depreciate by 13.7 percent while midsize pickups saw their value decline by a mere 5.1 percent. Ricky Beggs, senior vice president and Managing Editor with Black Book, says midsize pickups are holding their value better than other products on the market due to the fact that there are so few brand-new options available. Currently, only Chevrolet , Nissan and Toyota offer midsize pickup trucks. Honda has a player in the game in the form of the Ridgeline , which is a sort of cross between a traditional pickup and a crossover, and the discontinued Ford Ranger falls into a smaller size class that no longer exists in the US. What’s all this mean to you? If you happen to have a set of keys to midsize pickup in your pocket, you’ve made a good investment. Don’t expect to see the machine depreciate as quickly as other vehicles on the road. Conversely, if you’re in the market, expect to pay a bit more than you might have expected for a non-fullsize pickup truck.

Earlier this year, the Tacoma added the go-anywhere TRD T/X Baja Series truck for the off-road enthusiast, and now it’s adding the Limited model to appeal to buyers looking for a more luxurious-ish version of the popular truck. The 2012 Tacoma is pictured above since Toyota has not yet supplied images of the 2013 Tacoma (including the Limited). Toyota’s press release does not list the pricing for the 2013 Tacoma’s Limited Package, but it is listed on the configurator as a $7,345 option. For this price, the Tacoma is upgraded with leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, SofTex heated front seats and Display Audio with navigation, Entune infotainment and JBL speakers. Visually, the Tacoma Limited gets its bling on with plenty of shiny stuff including 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome on the grille, fog light surrounds, door mirrors and handles, as well as a big chunk of chrome on the rear bumper. Interestingly, Toyota’s website only shows the Limited Package available on the Tacoma Double Cab V6 4×4 long bed that starts at $28,085, meaning that going all in with the Tacoma Limited would run $35,430.
